A brooding hotel mystery that gets the atmosphere right and the story badly wrong - go in with eyes wide open about what you're signing up for.

I went into this one curious, given the pedigree of a Daedalic-published narrative game set inside a snowbound Montana hotel in 1993. The setup is genuinely strong: you play as Nicole, returning to her late father's crumbling Timberland Hotel to settle his estate, only to get snowed in and start unraveling the circumstances around the death of Rachel Foster, the teenage girl her father had an affair with. That premise has real weight, and for the first hour or so, the game earns it. The hotel itself is the best thing here - eerie, well-designed, and atmospheric in a way that pulls you forward room by room. On the mechanics side, this is a first-person walking sim in the mold of Gone Home or Firewatch. You explore the hotel day by day, picking up items, consulting a map, and using a handful of tools - a flashlight, a sound recorder - to progress. Your main companion is Irving, a FEMA agent you only ever communicate with via an early mobile radio, and the back-and-forth dialogue between Nicole and Irving is well-voiced and genuinely one of the stronger elements of the package. Chapters autosave at the end of each in-game day, and the whole thing runs around four to five hours, which is about the right length for a game this light on interactivity. Here is where things get complicated. The mixed Steam score (68% positive across nearly seven thousand reviews) reflects a real fault line in player reaction, and it centers almost entirely on the story's handling of its subject matter. The game deals with child sexual abuse and suicide, and a significant number of critics and players argue it handles both poorly - framing an abusive relationship in ways many found tone-deaf, and culminating in a late-game sequence that forces Nicole into an interactive suicide scenario. The developers consulted professionals during development, but the critical consensus, including across a large body of reviews, is that the execution does not match the intent. If that kind of narrative misfire is a dealbreaker for you, consider yourself warned. What the game does well, it does with quiet confidence. The sound design is genuinely impressive, building loneliness and dread through sparse audio cues that spike when the plot needs them to. The hotel setting rewards slow exploration, even if the actual playable area is more limited than its size suggests. Players who engage with the mystery on its own terms and can look past the story's rougher edges will find a game that holds attention for its full runtime - just do not expect the ending to pay off what the atmosphere promises. This is a hard recommend to calibrate. Fans of short, story-led walking sims who are comfortable with heavy subject matter and understand the critical context around the narrative choices may find enough here to justify the time. Everyone else, especially anyone hoping for a thoughtful or cathartic treatment of the themes the title implies, is likely to leave frustrated. Alex, Scout Team

Veredicto de GamerScout

Worth a session for atmosphere-first walking sim fans, but the story's handling of its dark themes is a genuine liability that splits opinion hard.
