A pirate revenge RPG with genuinely exciting naval combat buried under rough land mechanics and a troubled launch history - approach with patience or not at all.

I want to be honest with you before you click anything: this game carries baggage. The original Raven's Cry shipped in 2015 in a state critics described as one of the worst releases of that year, and Vendetta is the studio's attempt to salvage and rebuild it into something worth playing. That context matters, because the community reception is still split between people judging what this game is now and people who never forgave what it was before. So what is it now? A third-person open-world action-RPG set in the 17th-century Caribbean, where you play as Christopher Raven - a one-handed, rum-soaked pirate captain hunting down the men who murdered his family. The story is dark in a way that feels earnest rather than stylish. Christopher is not a loveable rogue. He is a broken man, and the game leans into that moodiness throughout. Side quests let you dig into your crew's backgrounds, and a reputation system built around savagery versus mercy shapes how the world reacts to you. Ship upgrades, crew management, and different ammunition types add tactical texture to the naval encounters. And those naval encounters are genuinely the reason to be here. Maneuvering through cannon range, managing crew morale, worrying about mutiny if you take too many hits - the ship combat has a surprising amount of considered design packed into it. Some reviewers have compared the feeling to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag at a smaller scale, and that reads as fair. The open waters carry a weight and momentum that the rest of the game struggles to match. The land combat is a different story. You get two basic attacks and a handful of unlockable special moves, and the enemy AI rarely demands more than that. Stealth sections can be derailed by wandering wildlife - jaguars, tapirs, monkeys - that alert nearby enemies, which is more irritating than atmospheric. Bugs linger, including some that affect main quest progression, though patches have addressed the worst offenders. The writing swings between atmospheric and uncomfortable. The game does not sanitize pirate life, and some of its content around violence and marginalized groups sits poorly with modern players - not for shock value in a productive way, but because it often feels thoughtless rather than intentional. That is a genuine caveat worth naming. The soundscape has defenders, particularly the sea ambience and the pirate shanties scattered across taverns, even if that tavern music loops aggressively. The voice acting lands more often than it should, given the budget constraints. Who is this actually for? Players who remember the Sea Dogs games and tolerate rough edges for the sake of open-sea atmosphere might find something real here. Anyone coming in cold expecting a polished RPG will likely tap out before the naval combat clicks. The median playtime sitting around seven hours suggests many people never stay long enough for that click to happen. If you have patience for a game that half-works and half-stumbles, the parts that work are worth the parts that don't - just barely. Kai, Scout Team
