My first hour with The Quarry felt less like playing a game and more like settling in for a well-budgeted horror film where the remote control occasionally asks for my opinion. That framing is not a complaint. Supermassive Games, the studio behind Until Dawn and the Dark Pictures Anthology, has refined its formula to the point where the seams barely show. You guide nine camp counselors through a single catastrophic night at Hackett's Quarry, making split-second calls that ripple through a branching story with a genuinely surprising number of possible outcomes. The Deluxe Edition on Xbox bundles the base game with the Death Rewind system (which lets you reverse a handful of fatal decisions per run), a Gorefest Movie Mode that cranks the carnage, an 80s-themed costume pack, and a Horror History Visual Filter set that slaps grain and color shifts over the whole thing like a VHS tape left in a hot car. What the game does exceptionally well is atmosphere. The lighting work is striking, with darkness used as a genuine tool rather than a performance tax. Camera placement throughout the chapters shows real craft, frequently hiding threats just at the edge of the frame. The cast, which pulls recognizable faces from film and TV, gives performances that hold up even under close scrutiny during the slower exploration stretches. Quick-time events, firearm sequences where you aim freely but from a fixed position, and tense breath-holding moments all vary the interaction enough that the roughly eight-hour runtime does not drag. Decision points appear constantly, flagged with a stark "PATH CHOSEN" prompt that makes each choice feel weighted even when you cannot immediately see why. The criticisms are real though, and worth knowing before you commit. The opening chapters move slowly, front-loading character banter before any genuine threat materializes, which can test patience on a first run. The breath-holding hide sequences telegraph themselves too obviously with a visible on-screen indicator, stripping out most of the tension the mechanic should carry. Shooting segments can punish small aiming errors disproportionately, since the hit window on successful shots is narrower than the game implies. And replaying to chase different endings is more friction than it should be, as chapter select only unlocks post-credits and does not let you branch freely mid-chapter without committing to a full restart from that point. The Death Rewind system included in this edition softens that last pain point somewhat, giving you a few precious do-overs without full chapter replays. Who is this for? If you sat through Until Dawn more than once and called it time well spent, The Quarry is the obvious next stop. If you regularly watch horror films with friends and want something to argue about in real time, the online and couch co-op modes let other players vote on or take over decisions, which turns the whole thing into a genuinely chaotic group experience. Pure action or open-world players who need moment-to-moment control will find it thin. But for anyone who values interactive storytelling, a strong cast, and the particular anxiety of watching a character you like walk toward something you know is a terrible idea, it delivers.
