Thirteen games deep and Falcom still knows how to gut-punch you. If you've earned your Zemuria frequent-flyer miles, Trails beyond the Horizon pays every single one of them out.

I've followed Van Arkride through two Daybreak games waiting for the Calvard arc to fully ignite, and Beyond the Horizon is the moment it finally does. This is the thirteenth entry in the Trails series and the third chapter of the Calvard arc, which means it arrives carrying the weight of a decade-plus of interconnected lore, characters who have had five games to breathe, and mysteries that date back to Trails in the Sky. None of that is a warning - it's a promise, but only to players who have done the homework. The story splits into three parallel routes, each anchored by a returning protagonist. Van Arkride and Arkride Solutions handle the Calvard-side fallout from President Gramheart's audacious Project Startaker - a manned space launch that is not remotely as innocent as it sounds. Rean Schwarzer leads his Thors crew as the outside-looking-in international perspective, while Kevin Graham, back in a playable role for the first time since Trails in the Sky the 3rd, follows the Septian Church thread deep into territory the series has only teased at until now. Kevin's route alone is worth the price of admission for long-term fans. The three-route structure, similar to Trails into Reverie, works better here because the narrative stakes are genuinely continental - even cosmic - and the ending goes to places the series has never attempted before. Pacing in the early hours is the familiar slow burn, with heavy exposition and character recaps testing your patience, but the final act pays it back with interest. Combat builds on the Daybreak hybrid system - field battles in real-time, command battles in turn-based - and adds four meaningful new mechanics. Awakening lets characters enter an empowered state in both field and command modes; ZOC slows time in the field for a tactical window; Shard Commands let you buff your whole squad without burning a turn; and BLTZ augments characters who aren't in the active party. The Craft levelling system, where skills grow stronger with repeated use, adds a subtle layer of investment that actually matters past hour 40. Quartz EP cost calculations were also quietly revised, closing some of the more exploitable zero-cost casting loops from earlier entries. Field battles still feel shallower than a full action RPG - the ZOC slow-down helps, and Awakening makes clearing trash mobs satisfying, but anyone expecting Ys-level action will find it thin. Command battles, especially boss encounters, are where the system genuinely sings. The Grim Garten, a rogue-lite optional dungeon with its own lore thread about Ouroboros, offers a nice pace break and has a hard completion cutoff before the point of no return, so don't sleep on it. The worldbuilding depth here is exceptional even by series standards. Long-running NPC storylines from across the Calvard games get genuine resolutions, the lore implications of the space program recontextualize events from games as far back as Cold Steel, and the game makes a credible case for being the pivot point on which the entire Trails saga turns. The soundtrack is the best in the Calvard arc, the English voice acting holds up, and the Timely Terms system - which lets you pull up in-game archive entries mid-scene - is an underrated quality-of-life addition for anyone who occasionally blanks on a proper noun. On the downside: the stealth and tailing minigames return and remain as tedious as ever, and some reviewers have noted that Rean's route, while enjoyable, leans more on nostalgia than on fresh narrative ground. If you are new to Trails, do not start here. At minimum, play Trails through Daybreak and its sequel first; ideally, have the Cold Steel and Reverie games under your belt too. The series has always been a slow-build investment, and Beyond the Horizon is the most demanding entry yet in terms of prerequisite knowledge. For the converted, though, this is the payoff that has been slowly assembling across thirteen games - a wild, lore-dense, emotionally satisfying arc conclusion that leaves the larger saga in a genuinely exciting new configuration. Essential for Trails veterans ready to see Zemuria's biggest lore payoff yet; an impenetrable wall for anyone who skipped the earlier games.
