Four players, one alien ocean, and enough existential dread to ruin a perfectly good Friday night. Subnautica 2 is an Early Access survival game that already hooks hard, but it stops dead before you're ready for it to.

I've been the person who sets up co-op nights for years, and when I pitched Subnautica 2 to my group as a four-player underwater horror-survival session, I got exactly two brave volunteers and one immediate refusal. That felt about right. This is not a casual kart racer you fire up after dinner. It is a slow-burn alien ocean survival game with genuine atmosphere, and the co-op wrapper changes the tension more than you might expect. Playing it with friends is less terrifying than going alone, but it is still terrifying, and that balance is impressive. The new planet Zazura is entirely hand-crafted, not procedurally generated, and Unknown Worlds made a deliberate call to abandon the original Subnautica's familiar world of 4546B. On a completely new planet, you have no frame of reference. An unfamiliar sound could be harmless or lethal, and the game leans into that ambiguity constantly. The core loop will feel immediately familiar to anyone who has played the original: gather resources, manage oxygen, craft tools, build a base, then descend deeper into increasingly hostile biomes. But several new systems layer on top of that foundation. Adaptations are permanent upgrade unlocks that expand what your character can physically do, and they give progression a satisfying momentum that the original's survival loop sometimes lacked. The Tadpole is your starting submersible, with customisable attachment slots for storage or speed, and a proximity-based inventory sharing mechanic in co-op lets you pull from a teammate's locker during crafting without fumbling through trade menus. Resource gathering and inventory management are both noticeably smoother than the first game, and oxygen management, food, water, temperature, and power all remain present but are tuned to support exploration rather than constantly interrupt it. Co-op supports up to four players online with crossplay, and you can freely convert a solo save to a multiplayer session and back again without losing progress. For a group of friends, that flexibility is genuinely useful. The ocean still generates real fear even with company. Steep drop-offs and pitch-dark water below you have a way of silencing even the loudest voice chat. Where the multiplayer currently falls short is depth of design: roles between players are not meaningfully differentiated yet, and the co-op experience is essentially the solo experience shared rather than a fundamentally different mode. The roadmap does include proximity chat, a revive system, and more co-op-specific features, so this area will develop over the Early Access period, which Unknown Worlds estimates at two to three years before version 1.0. The honest Early Access caveats are real and worth stating plainly. The current build delivers somewhere in the range of 15 to 20 hours before the content runs out and the game notifies you it has nothing more to give right now. The map at launch covers at least two regions divided into biomes and sub-biomes, with more regions confirmed for future updates. Biome transitions feel less organic than in the original, some players have noted that the early narrative structure is more linear and hand-holdy than Subnautica's legendary open-ended discovery, and combat feedback against creatures is inconsistent, with most wildlife currently immune to damage from your tools. These are all known issues the community is actively flagging, and Unknown Worlds has a public feedback board and a track record of responding to exactly this kind of input. The studio shipped the first Subnautica through a long Early Access period and finished it as one of the best survival games ever made. That history earns them some patience here. For my co-op group, Subnautica 2 right now is the correct purchase if you want to get in at the lowest price point and do not mind hitting a wall after your first big weekend of play. If your crew wants a complete experience from session one, hold off. If you are a solo player who loved the original's suffocating silence and open-ended discovery, the atmosphere is absolutely intact, but the current content ceiling will frustrate you sooner than expected. Controller support is solid for couch-adjacent play, and cloud saves mean you can move between machines without drama. Riley, Scout Team

Buy now if you can tolerate a 15-20 hour content ceiling; wait for 1.0 if you want the full Subnautica experience in one sitting.
