Purple Lamp's third SpongeBob platformer is the tightest one yet, built around a character-swap mechanic that actually earns its place rather than just being a bullet point on the box.

My first thought booting up Titans of the Tide was that Purple Lamp had found a formula and was sticking to it hard. Three games into their SpongeBob revival, that comfort-food familiarity is both the title's greatest strength and its most honest limitation. But credit where it's due: the studio did not just repackage The Cosmic Shake. The new instantaneous character-swap system, built around SpongeBob and Patrick sharing a ghostly curse via a BFF Ring, is genuinely clever. You toggle between them at any point, even mid-air, and the character in ghost form floats alongside you as a path indicator. SpongeBob leans on karate strikes and his returning bubble move, while Patrick brings underground burrowing and a spectral grappling whip to the table. Levels are designed around forcing you to mix both kits, and the sequences that do this well are the game's clear high point. The ghost-lamp mechanic layers on top of all that cleanly. Colored lights reveal or hide floating platforms, and later sections combine lamp-switching with mid-air swaps for some genuinely satisfying platforming gauntlets. There are also Ghostboard sections, essentially surfboards that work on both land and water, which provide breezy speed-run detours and serve as the backbone for side-quest races scattered across hub areas. Side quests themselves range from helping ghostly citizens return to normal, to jellyfish chases and small environmental puzzles involving NPC favorites like Mrs. Puff, Larry the Lobster, and Fred the My-Leg Guy. The Krusty Krab, rebuilt as a pirate-themed mobile hub, ties everything together and functions as your fast-travel anchor between locations including Neptune's Palace and Goldfish Island. Where things wobble is pacing. The cutscenes look great rendered in Unreal Engine 5, but their timing is off in a way that's hard to ignore. Scenes often cut in or out a beat too early or too late, and a story that was already sitcom-thin ends up feeling dragged by its own transitions. Combat, meanwhile, is the kind of light spectral-enemy brawling that gets the job done without ever exciting you. Reviewers consistently flagged both points, and they're fair criticisms. The game also runs short, around nine to ten hours for a fairly thorough playthrough, which makes the occasional level recycling more noticeable. A post-launch Tidal Season Pass adds further challenges, but the Plankton-focused content sits behind either busywork progression or an extra purchase, which leaves a slightly sour taste. On the technical side, the move to Unreal Engine 5 brings better visuals but some players reported crashes, stutter, and delayed asset loads, so keep a manual save habit. For who it's actually made for, the answer is fairly clear. If you have any affection for the show, the density of references, callbacks, unlockable show-themed costumes, and episode-referencing audio collectibles is going to hit exactly right. The full original voice cast is present, and the dialogue animations are sharper than any previous Purple Lamp entry. Kids and families get an accessible, forgiving platformer with adjustable difficulty, save-anytime support, and controller-first design that plays comfortably. Returning players from Battle for Bikini Bottom or The Cosmic Shake will recognize the bones immediately, but the swap mechanic does enough new work that this doesn't feel like a pure retread. Steam user sentiment sits at 93 percent positive across over a thousand reviews, which for a licensed platformer is legitimately strong signal. Alex, Scout Team

Best for SpongeBob fans and families who want a tight, mechanics-forward platformer and can forgive a short runtime and choppy cutscene pacing.
