Two games for the price of one: a remaster of one of Sonic's best, plus a brand-new Shadow campaign that outshines its host. If the blue hedgehog ever lost you, this might be the package that wins you back.

I went in expecting a nostalgia cash-in and walked out genuinely impressed by both halves of this package. The Sonic Generations remaster holds up reasonably well as a love letter to the franchise's greatest hits, letting you blast through reimagined stages as Classic 2D Sonic and Modern 3D Sonic in parallel acts. The structure is still clever: each zone gets a side-scrolling pass and a full-speed 3D pass, and the contrast between them rarely gets old. That said, returning to it after thirteen years does expose its age. The Modern Sonic half no longer feels like a showcase of where the series is headed, since the franchise has moved on considerably since 2011, and the roughly three-hour runtime on Sonic's side can feel rushed once the nostalgia wears off. The remaster also adds small quality-of-life touches like multiple save slots and an improved hub, but this is a polish job, not a ground-up rebuild. The real story here is Shadow Generations, and critics are right to call it the headline act. Shadow plays meaningfully differently from Sonic: he can boost and use a homing attack, but gains a growing toolkit of Doom Powers as the campaign progresses. Chaos Control lets him slow down time to push through tough sections, Chaos Spear fires energy bolts at enemies, and later abilities like Doom Surf and Doom Blast open up new traversal options that keep the moment-to-moment feel fresh from stage to stage. Unlike the skill-shop system in the Sonic half, these are narrative unlocks tied directly to Shadow's arc against Black Doom, so mechanical growth and story progression actually move together. The levels draw from Sonic Adventure 2, the 2005 Shadow the Hedgehog, and other 3D-era games, giving long-time fans plenty to recognize while keeping the design tight and fast. The hub world here is also a full 3D space with collectibles, concept art, and music from across Shadow's history, a clear step up from the flat White Space in the Sonic half. Where things slip is the boss design. Shadow Generations has some of the weakest boss fights in recent Sonic memory: slow, messy, and barely threatening in a game where the stage-to-stage action is genuinely excellent. The Doom Powers themselves received some criticism too, as not every level makes smart use of the full ability set, and a few later stages pile on mechanics faster than the design justifies. The story is serviceable fan service rather than anything that will stick with you. If you go in expecting a screenplay, you will be disappointed. If you go in expecting fast, well-constructed platforming with a protagonist who finally controls the way he should have in 2005, you will be fine. For anyone new to the series entirely, this is a strong entry point: two distinct play styles, a soundtrack that holds up to any action platformer released recently, and enough replay hooks via leaderboards and alternate routes to justify return visits. Veterans who already own the 2011 original on PC might feel the Sonic side is redundant, but Shadow Generations alone justifies the purchase if the character has ever appealed to you. Short overall runtime is a genuine concern, but the quality-to-length ratio is hard to argue with. Alex, Scout Team

Best for lapsed Sonic fans and newcomers alike, with Shadow's campaign alone making the package worth it despite short runtimes and weak boss fights.
