Konami's boldest gamble in years lands harder than expected: a melee-only survival horror set in fog-choked 1960s rural Japan, written by the creator of Higurashi, and genuinely worth losing sleep over.

I went into Silent Hill f ready to be disappointed. Switching the series from its familiar American small-town dread to 1960s rural Japan, handing development to a studio better known for ports and remasters, stripping out firearms entirely - it read like a checklist of ways to wreck a franchise. What I got instead was probably the most cohesive, affecting horror game Konami has put out in a generation. The setup is simple on the surface. Protagonist Shimizu Hinako leaves home after a fractious night with her parents, meets up with friends Shu, Rinko, and Sakuko in the isolated town of Ebisugaoka, and then watches the town swallow itself in thick fog and crimson spider lilies. From that point, the game never really lets you breathe. The story, written by Ryukishi07 - the visual novelist behind Higurashi When They Cry and Umineko - is layered, uncomfortable, and deeply rooted in themes of trauma, abuse, gender oppression, and identity fracture. It is not subtle, but it earns its darkness rather than just wallowing in it. Multiple playthroughs are baked into the design, with Ryukishi structuring the narrative to actively recontextualize earlier scenes the second time through. Combat is the most divisive element and the reviews split pretty cleanly along lines of player patience. This is the first Silent Hill with no guns at all - just melee weapons (steel pipes, kitchen knives, baseball bats) that degrade with use and can be repaired via toolkits. On top of that, Hinako manages a stamina bar, a sanity meter that powers focus attacks and counters, and a limited inventory. The underlying system has genuine depth: perfect dodges refill stamina entirely, the Focus mechanic functions like locking on to an enemy's weak point in place of a gun's aim, and monsters gradually pick up harder-to-read attack animations as the story escalates. When it clicks, the tension is real and deliberate. When it doesn't - and particularly in cramped indoor locations where the camera gets stuck behind Hinako's shoulder - it collapses into frustration faster than it should. The difficulty gap between Story and Hard mode also feels wide, with neither extreme feeling perfectly tuned. Visually, the game is doing something genuinely distinct from the rusty industrial decay the series is known for. Artist kera designed a bestiary rooted in Japanese folklore - doll-like kashimashi stitched together from multiple bodies, school-uniform scarecrow ayakakashi that hide in crowds, the faceless chain-bound kamugara that crawls toward Hinako listening for footsteps. As the town is consumed, Ebisugaoka shifts from quiet fog-grey to vivid reds and oranges as spider lilies and fleshy growths wrap themselves around the infrastructure. The Dark Shrine area, Shinto-inspired and bathed in cool blues, provides a striking tonal contrast. Some reviewers flagged that too many monsters share similar base models, but the art direction holds up well enough that it rarely kills the mood. The audio direction is equally strong, with 3D sound doing serious work making enemies feel genuinely threatening before they come into view. Silent Hill f is not a game for everyone. Its combat systems are heavy, its story is deliberately opaque on a first run, and it demands patience from players who just want to get from scare to scare without resource-managing their way through every fight. But for anyone who values horror that has something on its mind - who wants monsters that mean something and a script that respects their intelligence - this is the most interesting the series has been in a very long time.
