Johnny Gat and Kinzie descend into a hellish open world to punch Satan in the face, with angelic wings, demonic powers, and absurdist weapons in tow. A lean, breezy standalone expansion that knows exactly what kind of chaos it wants to deliver.

Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell is a standalone open-world action game set in New Hades, a lava-drenched, demon-infested city spread across five distinct islands: Shantytown, the Barrens, Downtown, the Forge, and the Den. The setup is pure Saints Row logic: Satan kidnaps the Boss to arrange a marriage to his daughter Jezebel, so Johnny Gat and Kinzie Kensington jump through a portal to Hell and start shooting. Historical figures like William Shakespeare and Vlad the Impaler show up as quest-givers, which is the kind of bonkers premise the series has always leaned into hard. Gameplay carries over the superpower framework from Saints Row IV with a suitably infernal twist. Super sprint returns, telekinesis is swapped out for a demon-summoning ability, and Blast can be upgraded into variants that turn enemies to stone, poison clouds, or health-draining traps. The biggest new mechanic is flight: Johnny sprouts angelic wings and you can zip across all five islands in minutes. It feels genuinely good and makes every rooftop, soul cluster, and collectible chest feel reachable and fun to grab. The weapons lean into the Seven Deadly Sins theme, including a Gluttony Gun that coats enemies in cake batter for other demons to eat, and the Devil's Workshop DLC adds the Jester's Skull weapon (Yorick, the source of Shakespeare's power) plus an alternate Saints-purple wing skin for both playable characters. Progress is gated behind a Satan's Wrath meter rather than traditional story missions: you fill it by completing Activities and Diversions like Mayhem, Fraud, Survival, and Vehicle Theft, which unlocks cutscenes and pushes the narrative forward. The structure works fine but it does expose the expansion's thin mission variety pretty quickly. Vehicles exist but are rendered nearly irrelevant by flight, combat is forgiving to the point of being nearly risk-free, and the story wraps up in roughly four to five hours if you are reasonably direct. There is a co-op mode for local two-player sessions, which softens the brevity somewhat. Where the game wobbles is in the details. Enemy variety is thin, with most demons being reskinned versions of familiar archetypes. The graphical quality did not age especially well even at launch, and critics at the time noted it looked like a last-gen title running at higher resolution. If you come in expecting the narrative depth or creative mission design of Saints Row IV's loyalty quests, you will leave a little hungry. The short runtime is the single biggest sticking point and it comes up in virtually every review the game received. Still, Gat Out of Hell does one thing exceptionally well: it commits completely to its absurd premise and keeps the energy high the whole time you are in it. A full-length in-game musical number, a talking skull weapon, and a Ouija board that sets the whole plot in motion are not accidents. This is a game that knows it is a snack and seasons itself accordingly. Saints Row fans looking for a few hours of overpowered, wing-flapping carnage in a goofy hellscape will find exactly that. Best for Saints Row IV fans who want a few more hours of breezy, overpowered chaos and are fine with a thin story to justify it.
