A clunky, charming open-world action RPG about a soul-stripped pirate island-hopping across a Caribbean-flavored world to reclaim what a shadow lord stole from him. Rough edges included, no apologies.

Risen 3: Titan Lords is Piranha Bytes doing what Piranha Bytes does: building a dense, lived-in open world full of buried treasure and surly NPCs, then wrapping it in combat mechanics that feel like they were designed by someone who has heard of fun but never personally experienced it. You play a new Nameless Hero, brother of recurring pirate Patty Steelbeard, who gets his soul yanked out by a Shadow Lord in the opening act and spends the next 30-plus hours island-hopping across a Caribbean-inspired archipelago to get it back. No prior knowledge of the series is required, and the story holds up reasonably well on its own terms. The world is the game's clear strength. Once the tutorial drops you onto the map, most of the Southern Seas open up immediately. Each island is genuinely large and detailed, packed with side quests, hidden environmental storytelling, and enough monsters aggressively guarding every patch of grass to keep you on your toes at all times. The Complete Edition bundles in all DLC, which adds two extra islands with their own quest lines, accessible early so returning players can skip straight to the new content. Faction choice matters here more than in most action RPGs: you can align with the Demon Hunters, the magic-focused Mages and their Guardian warriors, or the voodoo-practicing Natives, and each path opens genuinely different skills. Magic in particular changes the feel of combat dramatically, with abilities like the Demon Hunter Shockwave letting you scatter groups of enemies before finishing them with a crossbow or blade. The problems are real and recurring. The core melee loop, built on parrying, heavy attacks, and slashes, feels exploitable in ways that undercut any sense of victory by the late game. A morality system tied to soul points tracks your choices but enforces its rules inconsistently, sometimes docking you for neutral dialogue and ignoring genuinely cruel actions elsewhere. Dialogue occasionally fires out of sequence, and the inventory has a habit of swapping your equipped weapon between loading screens. There are also sea combat segments with ship cannons that are initially fun but rough around the edges. Visually, even by 2014 standards it looked dated, though the art direction on the tropical settings does a decent job selling the atmosphere. For players who already know the Piranha Bytes formula, this is the most functional entry in the Risen sub-series. The progression system skips traditional levels entirely in favor of a Glory-based attribute spending system that rewards exploration and quest completion. Companion characters, including the ghost Mendoza and the early-game healer Bones, add some personality to the journey. The ending differs based on your soul value, giving players a small but real reason to commit to a moral direction. It is not a tightly designed RPG. It is, however, the kind of game where you keep pushing forward because the next island might have something weird and excellent waiting on it. Alex, Scout Team
