A solo dev poured decades of love into this sci-fi ARPG, and the Rewrite mechanic alone makes it worth your attention, if you can stomach a few rough edges.

I keep coming back to games built by one person with something to prove, and Reality Break earns its place in that tradition. Solo developer Courtney Liessen has been carrying this sci-fi ARPG idea around since her Diablo 2 days, and the passion is tangible in how deeply interlocked the systems are. You are a mercenary spaceship pilot who accidentally absorbs the power to warp reality itself, and the game almost immediately hands you tools to exploit that premise in ways most developers would never trust a player with. The twin-stick movement and omni-directional shooting feel tight and responsive from the first session. Loot drops constantly, leveling happens quickly, and the progression has that compulsive pull familiar to anyone who has lost evenings to Diablo-adjacent games. What separates Reality Break from its inspirations is the Rewrite mechanic: a system that lets you alter the fundamental rules of the game mid-run. Found a weapon too large to fit your ship? Rewrite its parameters. Running out of time on a ticking mission? Rewrite the clock. Want to push an item beyond its rarity ceiling? Rewrite it. You can even Rewrite the Analysis system that upgrades your gear passively over real time, speeding it up if it is moving too slow. It is one of those mechanics that sounds like a gimmick until you realize it touches almost everything, including enemy attributes, dialogue, and the Codex set bonuses that reward you for looting entire equipment families. The roguelite layer is opt-in, which is the right call. Inspired by Dead Cells-style prestige loops, each voluntary timeline reset earns Reality Points that fund permanent Talents: unlocking Fate Affixes on loot, activating loot filters, preserving a single prized item across resets, and more. Some story beats do force a restart, and a portion of players have found that jarring after putting significant hours into a run. It is a legitimate frustration worth naming. The metagame progression outside of runs also draws criticism for being sparse compared to how richly engineered the in-run mechanics are, and accessibility options are thin for players who need them. On the positive side, the combat holds up across multiple timelines. The loot system rewards patience and experimentation rather than punishing players who like to tinker. Reviewers averaging around eighteen hours to complete the campaign report that the story, for all its time-travel scaffolding, stays coherent and delivers genuine surprises across timelines. Randomized elements keep repeated scenarios from feeling purely mechanical. The visuals are colorful and readable, ship designs carry personality visible even at top-down zoom, and the title screen dynamically reflects whatever you have equipped, a tiny detail that signals the craft behind the whole production. Steam players sitting at a Very Positive rating confirm that the core loop converts skeptics. Where it stumbles is in onboarding. Several mechanics need better in-game explanation, and players new to the genre may feel lost before the Rewrite system clicks. The metagame talent tree, while meaningful, can feel underdeveloped relative to how elaborate everything else is. None of these are dealbreakers, but they are friction points worth knowing about before you sit down. Kai, Scout Team
