A side-scrolling brawler about a kingdom divided over mandatory pants. Absurdist premise, six playable characters, local co-op chaos for up to four players.

Paw Paw Paw is a beat-em-up with one of the most quietly charming setups in recent indie memory: the King has decreed that every citizen must wear pants, and you are the resistance. The Antipants. It sounds like a joke, and it kind of is, but Simpleton commits to the bit with enough earnestness that the absurdity becomes its own kind of world-building. You pick from six animal characters, each with distinct move sets and playstyles, and then you punch your way through the kingdom's pro-pants enforcers in classic left-to-right brawler fashion. If you grew up with Final Fight or Streets of Rage, the structure will feel immediately familiar. The game's strongest card is local co-op for up to four players. Crammed onto a couch with friends, the on-screen chaos of four anthropomorphic animals beating up armored dogs over a pants mandate is genuinely funny and occasionally frantic. The pixel art has a hand-crafted quality that rewards a second look - character animations are expressive, enemy designs carry personality, and the color palette has warmth to it. The soundtrack does quiet, steady work in the background, unshowy but fitting, the kind of score that you only notice when it stops. Where things get complicated is in the solo experience. The combat is serviceable but thin. Move variety across the six characters exists, though the differences between them are not always deep enough to dramatically change how a run feels. Enemy patterns become predictable faster than you might want, and some sections drag in ways that feel more like padding than pacing. The Mixed review score on Steam reflects a real split: players who brought friends had a decent time, players who came alone often bounced off the repetition. That gap matters and you should factor it into your decision. There are also rough edges that suggest a small team working near the limits of their bandwidth. Hitboxes occasionally feel imprecise. The difficulty curve is uneven in spots. Nothing is game-breaking, but the lack of polish accumulates over a playthrough. For a game built around a single comedic premise, it also does not mine that premise quite as deeply as it could. The pants conceit sets an expectation of escalating silliness that the level design does not always meet. Still, I have a soft spot for games that know exactly what they are. Paw Paw Paw is not reaching for something it cannot hold. It is a compact, unpretentious beat-em-up with a funny hook and genuine co-op energy, made by a small team who clearly had a specific vision. If you have the right people around to play it with, that vision lands. If you are going in solo, you might want to temper expectations and treat it as a breezy afternoon rather than a full commitment. Kai, Scout Team
