A Vampire Survivors clone wearing Pathfinder's armor: functional for a few runs, thin on identity, and frustrating for anyone who showed up hoping for the IP's depth.

My first few runs through Gallowspire felt promising, I will admit that. There is something reliably satisfying about the bullet-heaven loop, and BKOM Studios at least understood the skeleton of what makes games like Vampire Survivors tick. You pick one of three classes, Fighter, Rogue, or Wizard, pair them with a companion from the remaining two, and descend through sixteen floors spread across three biomes, clearing enemy quotas per floor before moving on to a boss encounter every three levels. The Wizard's time-stop ultimate, the Rogue's area bomb, and the Fighter's armor burst give each class a distinct feel in those early hours, and the companion system, where the second hero fights alongside you and contributes their own unlocked talents, adds a genuine layer of run-to-run strategy. A Rogue companion dropping caltrops while you play Wizard can meaningfully change how hordes converge on you. That is real design, and it deserves acknowledging. The trouble is that the scaffolding past that first impression is shaky. During a run you fill four active ability slots and four passive slots via random card draws on level-up, with a limited re-roll available for bad luck. The pool of 67-plus abilities and 36-plus talents sounds generous on paper, but in practice the upgrade increments are brutally small, flat percentage bumps to range or cooldown that rarely produce the satisfying power spikes the genre lives on. Permanent progression between runs leans on gold-funded potion upgrades and quest completion, and those quests, things like killing thousands of enemies or standing still for 60 seconds, are designed to extend session count more than they are designed to reward creativity. Reaching the final boss, Tar-Baphon, on a first playthrough already demands significant grinding to hit the damage and survivability thresholds the game quietly requires. The Pathfinder branding is where things get genuinely melancholy, at least for someone who appreciates a world being used with intention. The license is visible in the class names, a few boss designs, and Tar-Baphon taunting you between floors, but lore depth is essentially absent. The setting of Gallowspire, a place with real mythic weight in the tabletop fiction, is reduced to three color-palette biomes. Community feedback since launch has pushed BKOM to add hyper mode, aim-and-dash mechanics, potion belts, and character sheets, which signals responsiveness to players, but the Steam reception settled at roughly 59 percent positive, which feels honest. The orchestral soundtrack, singled out for a Gold award in sound design, is genuinely the most atmospheric thing here, slightly at odds with the clean, cartoonish art style but doing real heavy lifting for the mood of descending a haunted tower. Who is this for, then? Casual survivors fans who want 20-to-40-minute runs in a dark fantasy setting, and who are not arriving with Kingmaker or Wrath of the Righteous expectations, will find a few pleasant evenings here. The co-op option, where a friend controls your companion locally, is a light but real addition for couch sessions. For Pathfinder devotees hoping the IP translates into something mechanically soulful, or for survivors enthusiasts who have already wrung the best out of Halls of Torment and want something with comparable depth, this tower is not tall enough.
