I'll be upfront: Pastry Lovers is not a game I would normally spotlight in a strategy column. But strip away the anime art and the baking theme and what sits underneath is a surprisingly structured stat-management loop dressed in cream puffs. You are not just reading a visual novel here. Every in-game day is a resource-allocation puzzle across three time slots - morning, afternoon, evening - where you choose between raising intelligence at the church, building baking skill at the bakery, grinding stamina at the farm, or earning gold on the street. Every choice costs opportunity. That tension is real, and it is the reason the game holds together. The progression system tracks multiple character attributes - intelligence, taste, stamina, skill, charm, and a separate Disrepute (Blackening) score - and each of the four romanceable routes (William, Henry Yi, Christopher DM, Haonan Ye) has specific stat thresholds you must hit before the internship chapter locks you in. Miss them and you are bounced to a lesser ending. There are over ten endings across the four main storylines, with additional in-game achievements tied to befriending thirteen supporting characters and collecting up to ten treasures. Getting the full picture across all routes easily runs ten to thirty hours, which is surprisingly generous for a budget-tier title. So what does not work? Two things, and they matter. First, the English translation is rough throughout. The meaning is almost always recoverable, but the grammar is erratic enough to be distracting in a game where the writing is the entire product. Second - and this one actually stings from a systems perspective - there is no persistent stat tracker on the internship paths. The game will show you your progress after a choice is made, but there is no log you can consult before committing. When the pastry shop internship starts demanding precise category percentages, the absence of a live dashboard becomes a real design hole. Community-made walkthroughs exist on Steam and fill the gap, but you should not need a third-party guide to manage your own stats. For the audience most likely to enjoy this: the game appeals to players who like their romance filtered through actual decision-making rather than pure narrative. If you want to pick dialogue options and drift toward a cute ending, this will frustrate you. If you enjoy optimizing a daily schedule across multiple variables, unlocking recipes, managing a Disrepute stat that gates you into specific routes, and then replaying to see alternate branches, Pastry Lovers delivers a competent loop that punches above its weight class for the asking price.
