Neverwinter Nights: Heroes of Neverwinter

I have a soft spot for Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition, a classic D&D RPG that Beamdog lovingly rebuilt for modern systems. So it genuinely pains me to sit here and write about Heroes of Neverwinter, which is not a campaign, not a quest pack, and not a new class. It is ten character portraits. That is the entire product. To be fair about what portraits actually do in NWN: Enhanced Edition, they are selected during character creation and serve as the face of your player character across the UI. They do not affect combat, dialogue, build choices, or anything that makes an RPG worth replaying. The portraits in this paid pack are applied to your character only and, critically, other players in multiplayer will not see them unless they also own the DLC. The new portraits do not automatically appear on any NPC in existing campaigns either, since NPC portrait assignments are baked into module files. The value problem here is stark and well-documented by the community. The Steam Workshop for NWN: Enhanced Edition has free portrait packs that dwarf this one in variety and volume. The Neverwinter Vault hosts community collections covering dozens of fantasy races and a broad spectrum of character types, all at no cost. Even Beamdog's own forums, at launch, were full of players pointing out that ten portraits felt thin for a paid add-on. Steam user reviews landed at a mixed 52% positive from a small sample, and the criticism is consistent: the quantity is low relative to what the community provides for nothing. If you are the kind of RPG player who cares deeply about having a specific painted portrait that matches your half-elf ranger headcanon, and the free workshop options genuinely do not cover what you want, then this pack might scratch that itch. Portrait immersion is a real thing in old-school CRPGs. But that is a narrow use case. For everyone else, spending time browsing the workshop or the Neverwinter Vault will get you more options, more variety, and zero cost. This DLC is best treated as an optional Beamdog support token, not a content purchase. Go in knowing what it is.
