I came to these Enhanced Editions expecting nostalgia bait, but what I found was two genuinely demanding RPGs that still hold up. Baldur's Gate and its sequel are turn-based, party-driven experiences built on D&D 2nd Edition ruleset, meaning attributes, saving throws, and THAC0 matter. You'll spend as much time building your party roster and managing inventory as you will in combat, and yes, that's part of the appeal if you're into optimization. The interface is dated but functional once you stop fighting it. These games aren't for everyone. They're text-heavy, fail-able in ways modern design discourages, and expect you to read tooltips and understand game systems. But if you want a dungeon-crawler that treats your tactical choices like they matter, and can tolerate 1990s UI conventions, the depth here is unmatched. Beamdog's ports bring these classics to console without compromising the mechanical heart that made them legendary.
