Cute, free-to-play water racer with five levels and three modes, but razor-thin content means you'll see everything in under an hour. Worth a look at zero cost, not worth chasing.

I'll be straight with you: My Paper Boat is the kind of game you stumble across on a slow Tuesday afternoon, click install because it costs nothing, and finish before your coffee gets cold. That's not necessarily a criticism, but it is the full picture, and you deserve to know it going in. The setup is simple. You steer a paper boat through five distinct water environments, each built in Unreal Engine and genuinely pretty for what the game is. The treasure cave, summer garden, forest, desert oasis, and canyon each have their own visual personality, and the water effects do a decent job selling the illusion of something handcrafted. Navigation is gentle, the optional tutorial gets you moving in about two minutes, and the controls are accessible enough that you could hand a gamepad to almost anyone and they'd be fine within seconds. The structure that adds replay value is the three game modes layered across those five levels. Collect sends you hunting coins scattered across the waterways. Aim puts a bow cannon in your hands and asks you to shoot targets. Rallye is the closest thing to a proper race, where you follow course markings to reach the harbour against the clock while obstacles try to knock you off line. A physical damage system means collisions with rocks actually leave a mark, which gives Rallye a little tension it otherwise wouldn't have. High scores unlock boat accessories and colour options, so there's a thin customisation loop encouraging you to replay levels for better runs. Steam achievements layer on top of that if you care about completion. Here's where the mixed Steam reception makes sense. Five levels times three modes gives you fifteen combinations, but the levels are short and the modes don't change the environments, only your objective. The content ceiling arrives fast. There's no multiplayer to speak of beyond the Steam tag suggesting it exists (the actual game is strictly single-player), no difficulty progression worth calling demanding, and no co-op that would make it a couch night option. For a group of friends looking for a casual laugh-together title, this isn't it. As a solo wind-down experience for five or ten minutes at a time, the relaxed atmosphere does its job. If you're a kid, a parent looking for something completely inoffensive, or just someone who wants a zero-pressure distraction that looks nicer than its size suggests, My Paper Boat delivers on that narrow brief. Experienced players looking for depth, challenge, or anything to share with friends on a Saturday night will hit the wall fast and move on. Riley, Scout Team
