Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord - War Sails
Bannerlord finally gets its seas, and the sandbox is bigger for it. Whether that expansion justifies the asking price depends almost entirely on how many hours you already have in Calradia.
Veredicto de GamerScout
Veterans with a fresh-campaign appetite will find the deepest naval sandbox in the genre; newcomers should wait for a discount.

I've spent a lot of hours building spreadsheet-level supply chains across Calradia's land routes, so when TaleWorlds announced War Sails, my first question wasn't 'cool, ships' but rather 'how deep does this actually go?' The answer is: deeper than most DLC at this price tier dares to attempt, though not without cracks in the hull. The expansion adds a full naval layer to Bannerlord's sandbox. We're talking 22 ships with distinct wind and wave physics, ranging from nimble fishing vessels to heavy war galleys. Each handles differently based on realistic weight and wind modeling, and storms are not just cosmetic. Push an overloaded cargo ship into bad weather and you will lose it. The new naval skill tree introduces mariner, boatswain, and ship master roles, so your crew specialization actually matters at the strategic level. On the campaign map, rivers have been widened, towns repositioned closer to water, and the entire northern coastline has been opened up with the new region of Nordvyg, the Jumne river valley, and the desolate Island of Beinland. Blockading towns, supplying armies via sea lanes, and raiding coastal villages from your fleet all plug directly into the existing economy and warfare systems rather than sitting as a bolted-on minigame. That integration is where War Sails earns its credibility. The new Nords faction is the other anchor point. Viking-inspired, close-quarters focused, and occupying territory that rewards naval access over traditional cavalry pushes. Diplomatically and militarily, the Nord presence reshapes trade and warfare across the whole map, which means even players who never take a ship to sea will feel the ripple effects. The dedicated naval campaign offers a structured way into these mechanics, though critics are right that it runs short. It introduces you to the world as a lone venturer working toward your first ship, but veteran players will outpace its pacing quickly. The custom naval battle mode, which lets you set wind, season, and time of day across river, coastal, or open sea maps, picks up the slack as a sandbox for experimenting with fleet compositions without committing to a full campaign restart. Now, the honest accounting. The AI has real weaknesses at sea. Enemy captains make poor routing decisions, and the chaos of a boarding action can tip from thrillingly emergent to frustratingly random depending on the engagement. Bugs at launch were notable enough to split the initial Steam reception, though the current overall score reflects a community that mostly stuck around after patches and came around. The DLC also requires a new campaign to access naval systems, which is a meaningful ask for anyone who has 300 hours in a current save. For newcomers to Bannerlord, War Sails treats you like a veteran from minute one, and the tutorial does not hold your hand through ship acquisition or fleet management. That is either a design philosophy you respect or one that will drive you off inside the first two hours. For strategy players who want to understand whether War Sails is worth starting fresh, the answer is yes, provided you can accept a mid-game power curve that requires earning your first ship rather than being handed one. The depth of the decision-making, from which ship type suits a river raid versus an open-sea blockade, to how you allocate naval skill points across clan members, is the kind of systemic thinking Bannerlord always rewarded on land. It now rewards it at sea too. The price-to-content ratio is the only real sticking point, and patient buyers who wait for a sale are not wrong to do so.
