Snake Eater's Cold War stealth classic rebuilt from scratch in Unreal Engine 5 - the controls finally match the mythology, though the 2004 level design occasionally fights back.

I went in expecting a glorified remaster with a fresh coat of paint. What Virtuos and Konami actually shipped is something more interesting and more frustrating than that in roughly equal measure. Released August 28, 2025, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a ground-up remake of the 2004 PS2 stealth-action game, dropping you into 1964 Soviet jungle territory as Naked Snake - codename for what will eventually become Big Boss - on a mission to extract a defecting scientist before a rogue nuclear threat reshapes the Cold War. The story, all original voice acting, and every boss fight are preserved with no cuts. What changes is almost everything underneath. The single biggest upgrade is movement. The original MGS3 was a product of its era: fixed cameras, stiff stance transitions, aiming that felt like you were fighting the controller as much as the enemy. Delta replaces all of that with an over-the-shoulder camera, fluid crouch-to-crawl transitions borrowed from Metal Gear Solid V's locomotion system, and tighter gunplay that no longer punishes you for attempting a firefight. Sneaking through tall grass now feels tense and deliberate rather than clunky, and the new 3D audio layer means you can actually hear guards repositioning around you with headphones on. The survival mechanics - eating live animals, treating wounds, managing stamina - carry over intact and still hit differently from anything else in the genre. That said, the mismatch between new controls and old level design is real and worth flagging. The AI and patrol patterns were built for a slower, more constrained Snake. Give him MGSV-grade mobility in those same corridors and certain sections tip from stealth sandbox into chaotic gunfight faster than they should. Some water-crossing sequences in particular have enemy sight lines calibrated so tightly that detection feels unfair rather than challenging. Patches have addressed some of this, but it remains the remake's clearest rough edge. The broader complaint from longtime fans is the "safe" approach: same script, same maps, same beats. No expanded areas, no new story content woven in. For players who know the original inside-out, the experience is more confirmation than revelation. For everyone else, including people who bounced off the PS2 version's controls or simply missed it entirely, this is the version to play. The Unreal Engine 5 visuals are genuinely striking - every jungle segment, the Virtuous Mission, the Cobra Unit boss fights - all of it holds up in 4K in a way that makes the source material feel ahead of its time rather than dated. The Snake vs. Monkey minigame returns too, which is either a selling point or evidence that Konami knows exactly who their audience is. A Photo Mode is included for the obvious reasons. Replayability is real: secrets, unlockables, and the sheer mechanical depth of the camo-and-camouflage system reward a second run far more than most action games. The short version: if you have never played Snake Eater, this is the definitive entry point, full stop. If you loved the original, the modernized controls alone justify the trip back. If you wanted a reimagining that pushed the world forward rather than just polishing the original's frame, you will come away wishing Konami had been more ambitious. Alex, Scout Team

Best for newcomers to the series and lapsed fans - veterans after a reinvention may find the faithful approach a double-edged knife.
