I went in expecting a loving parody of old-school D&D, and Knights of Pen and Paper delivers exactly that: pixel art aesthetics, deliberately cheesy humor, and turn-based combat that mimics a game master rolling dice behind a screen. You assemble a party, equip them with gear, and watch them bash monsters while you click through menus. It's got that cozy tabletop vibe without requiring you to own actual rulebooks. The problem is the novelty wears thin fast. Both games in this collection lean hard on one joke, "look, we're a RPG about playing D&D", and once you've seen the gag, there's not much mechanical meat underneath. Combat is deterministic, progression is straightforward, and grinding for gear becomes the main loop. If you're after a deep tactics game or even a solid roguelike, keep walking. But if you want a chill, self-aware afternoon with some old-school charm, this scratches that itch without demanding much from you.
