If you ever wished X-COM had a mercenary payroll, personality clashes, and a silenced pistol for night ops, this is the game that got there first and still does it better than most.

I've put more hours into spreadsheet-optimizing a JA2 squad than I care to admit publicly, so let me be direct: this is one of the most demanding and rewarding tactical games ever shipped on PC, and the Gold edition is the version to own. The core loop asks you to manage a liberation campaign across the fictional nation of Arulco, sector by sector, while balancing a mercenary payroll that will drain your budget faster than you expect. Every decision cascades. Hire the wrong mix of personalities and two of your best mercs will refuse to share a foxhole. Run out of cash mid-campaign and your A-team walks. The strategic layer is genuinely punishing, and that tension is exactly the point. The tactical combat is where the depth pays off. Each merc carries five attributes (agility, dexterity, strength, leadership, wisdom) plus four skills covering marksmanship, explosives, mechanical work, and medicine, and every stat does real work in the field. Action points govern everything from a careful crouch-crawl to a snap shot to the torso, and the system lets you allocate extra AP to steady a shot, which means even a firefight with three enemies involves real decision-making. Mercs can climb rooftops for sniper angles, move in stealth mode with knives and silenced pistols for night raids, or go loud with assault rifles when subtlety fails. The Gold Pack specifically hands you more granular control over the advanced difficulty settings: timed turns and no-save-in-combat are now options you toggle rather than rules the game imposes on you automatically, which is a smarter design than the base release managed. The Gold bundle also includes the Unfinished Business standalone campaign, which uses your JA2 save file and drops your seasoned squad into the Tracona island operation. It is shorter and more linear than the main game, and the community consensus is that it feels rushed, but it gives veterans something harder to chew on immediately after the credits roll. More importantly, this package is the foundation for the 1.13 community mod, arguably the most ambitious unofficial patch in PC gaming history. The 1.13 mod adds hundreds of new weapons, deeper mechanics, and a multiplayer system; it is recommended for higher-skilled players and represents a second, significantly harder game built on top of this one. A few honest caveats. The base game has DirectDraw compatibility problems on modern Windows, and you will likely want to install the JA2-Stracciatella source port before playing, which adds widescreen support and fixes stability without changing the gameplay. The AI, even praised by its fans, is described charitably as competent rather than brilliant; enemies will use cover and flank, but they will also occasionally make baffling choices that let a well-positioned sniper farm experience for free. The isometric graphics were not a strong point even in 1999, and nothing has changed that. None of this matters much once you are three hours deep into planning which sectors to hit in what order, who to train militia in, which enemy patrols to dodge and which to ambush. For newcomers to the genre, the learning curve is real but not as vertical as the reputation suggests. Start on a lower difficulty, take time to build a balanced roster with at least one dedicated medic, one mechanic with lockpicking, and a solid marksmanship specialist, and the game will open up in a way that very few titles from any era replicate. Strategy fans who lived through the XCOM golden age owe it to themselves to understand what the competition looked like. Diego, Scout Team
