Injustice 2 Hellboy (DLC)

My first instinct when Hellboy landed in Injustice 2 was pure curiosity. A Dark Horse Comics character, not a DC property, dropped into a DC fighter as part of Fighter Pack 2 - that crossover alone is worth paying attention to. NetherRealm treated the source material with real care: the trenchcoat, the filed-off horns, the revolver, and the enormous stone Right Hand of Doom are all present and accounted for, and the art style leans noticeably more comic-book than the gritty realism the rest of the roster carries. Some players found that visual mismatch jarring. Personally, I think it makes Hellboy one of the most distinctive-looking characters in the entire game. In terms of play style, Hellboy sits firmly in the heavy-bruiser lane. His toolkit includes the Devil's Revolver for mid-range zoning, the Fist of Doom and Doom Fury for close-quarters punishment, a Devil's Shoulder charge to close distance, and a character trait that activates armor so he can absorb incoming hits without his combo being interrupted. His special items - relics and charms like Agrippa's Charm and Broom's Rosary - lean into the paranormal-investigator flavor of the source material in a way that feels deliberate rather than grafted on. The Super Move sends the opponent to a literal hellscape for a beating, and when those fiery phantom horns ignite, it is hard not to appreciate how well NetherRealm translated the comic iconography. The honest caveat is that Hellboy has a learning curve that casual players may find frustrating. His attacks run on the slower side, and stringing them into effective combos requires timing and patience that faster-paced characters simply do not demand. He also suffered from a minor but hard-to-unsee animation quirk at launch: because animations mirror depending on which side of the screen he occupies, the Right Hand of Doom occasionally becomes a left hand, which is a small but distracting oversight for anyone who knows the character. For competitive or combo-obsessed players, there is depth here, but it takes genuine investment to unlock it. Casual players picking this up for novelty value might hit a wall. Who is Hellboy for, then? Fighting game fans who gravitate toward high-damage, deliberate heavyweights - think players who enjoyed Solomon Grundy in the first Injustice - will find a lot to work with once they get past the initial sluggishness. Hellboy fans who just want to see Mike Mignola's creation throw hands with Superman and Scarecrow will get exactly that satisfaction. It is a niche DLC pick, clear-eyed about what it offers: a distinctive character with a committed visual identity and a high-ceiling play style that rewards patience over button mashing.
