Tense extraction shooting wrapped in genuine Louisiana-and-Colorado gothic horror. The genre's tension ceiling is as high as it gets, but new players will bleed out long before they understand why veterans love it.

I've put time into a lot of extraction shooters, and most of them reach for tension without ever earning it. Hunt: Showdown 1896 earns it the hard way. Every match drops a team of one to three hunters into a sprawling map where the objective is to track and kill a monstrous bounty target, then extract alive while every other team in the lobby is trying to do the same thing or just murder you for your loot. Permadeath with meaningful stakes is the hook: your hunter can build up gear, traits, and weapon familiarity over a career, and losing them to a better player hurts in a way that few shooters manage. The bloodline progression system runs underneath all of that, persisting even through individual hunter deaths and gradually unlocking new weapons and character options as your account levels up. The core combat is genuinely distinctive. Stamina management and weapon sway mean you cannot sprint across open ground and immediately land a clean shot. Your hunter breathes hard, the crosshair swings, and you have to stop and settle before any precision shot lands. Period-accurate firearms, from lever-action repeaters to long-barreled infantry rifles with heavy recoil, each feel mechanically specific. The PvE layer adds pressure on top of the PvP: maps are populated with undead grunts, armored heavies, and boss monsters that you need to kill or navigate around, and every noise you make alerts other players to your position. The Colorado map added with the 1896 overhaul brings verticality that the older Louisiana bayou maps lacked, forcing teams to check cliffs, mine shaft choke points, and elevated wooden walkways during any compound assault. That said, the game has a complicated relationship with new players and it would be dishonest to gloss over it. The onboarding is sparse and assumes you either already know Hunt or are willing to lose repeatedly until the mechanics click. Matchmaking has drawn consistent criticism for throwing low-experience hunters into lobbies with veterans who have hundreds of hours of muscle memory. The revamped UI that shipped with the 1896 update drew widespread complaints at launch for being confusing and cluttered, and while Crytek committed to addressing feedback, friction in menus is still something new players should expect. The sound system, which was supposed to reward careful stealth, frequently gets undermined in practice because sprinting opponents and ambient animal noise make sneaking a strategic disadvantage rather than a genuine option. The Starter Edition specifically limits initial access to a smaller slice of the full weapon and hunter pool, so expect to work through bloodline levels before the full breadth of loadout options opens up. For players who enjoy building a kit through earned progression rather than starting with everything unlocked, this can actually feel rewarding rather than restrictive. The atmospheric presentation throughout is strong enough to carry the learning curve if you can tolerate the early losses: the map design, the audio mix of distant gunshots and croaking wildlife, and the creature designs all contribute to a dread that most shooters just do not bother to construct. This is a game worth approaching with a friend or two, because solo play against coordinated trios in the early ranks is a fast way to quit before you see what makes Hunt genuinely special. Veredicto de GamerScout

Best for patient players who want an extraction shooter with genuine stakes and won't mind losing their first ten hunters to learn the rules.
