The ring is gorgeous, the gunplay still slaps, and the co-op runs four players deep - but a missing competitive multiplayer and mixed Steam reception (63%) signal this one rewards newcomers more than veterans chasing nostalgia.

My first hour with Halo: Campaign Evolved felt like watching a childhood photograph get professionally restored - every detail sharper, every colour richer, and yet somehow slightly unfamiliar. Built on Unreal Engine 5, this is a full ground-up rebuild of the 2001 original, not a texture swap. The Silent Cartographer beach assault, the creeping horror of the Flood levels, the Warthog escape finale - all of it is here, and all of it looks genuinely spectacular in 2026. The combat loop is what holds it together. The classic two-weapon carry system, the regenerating shield that taught a generation how to peek-and-recover, plasma grenades sticking to Elites, Warthog gunners turning firefights into controlled chaos - it all translates cleanly. Halo Studios layered in mechanics from later games: you can now sprint, hijack enemy vehicles including the Wraith tank for the first time in a CE-era setting, and a broader weapon roster adds tactical variety the original never had. Skull modifiers, borrowed from Halo 2 onwards, let you remix encounters with randomized weapons or enemies, which gives repeat runs a genuine reason to exist. Four-player online co-op with crossplay and shared progression is the headline multiplayer feature, and it works well - this is a strong co-op FPS for a group who wants a story to push through together. The problems are real and worth flagging. Sprint feels grafted on rather than designed in - levels built for a walking-pace Chief let you outrun tanks and skip encounter pacing that the original carefully constructed. You can find a Skull to disable it, which almost proves the point. The three new prequel missions starring Chief and Sgt. Johnson add some flying sections that reviewers enjoyed, but the ground content feels thin and mostly disconnected from the emotional weight of the main campaign. And then there is the big absence: no classic competitive multiplayer. The original Halo's split-screen deathmatch and CTF modes were a cultural event. Their omission here is not a footnote - it is the reason Steam reviews landed mixed at 63% positive, and why veteran fans feel shortchanged by the package. Who should play this? First-timers, absolutely. If you have never put on the Mark VI armor, this is the cleanest, most accessible entry point the franchise has ever offered, with re-recorded dialogue, updated cinematics, and a campaign that still demonstrates why this series reshaped console FPS design. Returning players who want a solo or co-op nostalgia trip will find enough visual and mechanical polish to justify the run. Players who remember Halo CE primarily as a couch multiplayer machine will leave wanting more. The Metacritic critic score sits at 81, which lines up with the honest read: a well-executed remake of a great game that makes smart choices and one very consequential omission. Alex, Scout Team
