Three full campaigns, no monthly fee, and a skill-locked combat system that still holds up: Guild Wars Trilogy is an old-school online RPG that rewards planning far more than twitch reflexes.

I came into Guild Wars Trilogy half-expecting a relic that only nostalgia could defend. What I found instead was a genuinely distinctive online RPG that made smarter design choices than most games released in the two decades since. The Trilogy bundles three complete campaigns, Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall, each set on a different continent with its own story, aesthetic, and starting professions. That is a massive amount of content for a single purchase, and the fact that all three worlds eventually connect into a shared game space makes the package feel cohesive rather than bolted together. The core mechanic that separates Guild Wars from every other game trying to do the MMO thing is the eight-skill cap. You pick eight abilities before a mission and that is your entire toolkit until it ends. No swapping mid-combat, no infinite hotbars to memorize. The result forces you to actually think about builds, counters, and team composition. Prophecies eases you in with six core professions including the Warrior (swords, axes, hammers, heavy armor) and the Ranger, while Factions introduces the Assassin and Ritualist, and Nightfall adds the scythe-swinging Dervish and the spear-and-shout support Paragon. Every profession can also take a secondary profession, which multiplies the build options into something that can genuinely absorb weekends of theorycrafting. The three campaigns are not equally paced. Prophecies is the slowest burn of the three; you will spend a long time in the early zones before the world opens up and heroes become available. Nightfall is widely considered the better entry point for new players precisely because it introduces the hero system much earlier. Heroes are AI-controlled party members you can fully customize with skills and equipment, and they matter a lot for solo or small-group play. Factions is the most divisive: the city of Kaineng, the Echovald Forest, and the Jade Sea offer striking visual variety, but the campaign is shorter and its alliance-battle PvP systems feel unfinished compared to the tighter Guild versus Guild mode that Prophecies set up. The honest caveat is that Guild Wars is not a live game in the traditional sense anymore. The servers are still running and the community is smaller but dedicated, particularly around endgame content and the Hall of Monuments. PvP activity has thinned considerably compared to its peak years. If you are coming purely for competitive guild battles and structured PvP, temper your expectations about queue times. If you are coming for PvE, including co-op missions, hero micromanagement, and the satisfaction of cracking open a build that wrecks a dungeon, there is still plenty here. The dynamic content download system also means you are not sitting through a multi-gigabyte install before you can start playing. Noteworthy: the Trilogy does not include Eye of the North, the one true expansion pack in the series, which is sold separately. Eye of the North also serves as the bridge to Guild Wars 2 through the Hall of Monuments reward system, so if that cross-game legacy track interests you, budget for that purchase as well.
