Frostpunk's final DLC flips the power dynamic on its head: you're no longer the sovereign of New London, you're its errand runner, and that constraint is both the best and most divisive thing about it.

I've played through every Frostpunk scenario at least twice, colour-coded notes and all, and On The Edge is the one that still produces the most arguments in my head after the credits roll. The premise is simple enough to state: instead of commanding New London from the top, you are sent out to run Outpost 11, a resource extraction colony tasked with shipping steel back to headquarters while depending on New London for food, laws, and the occasional scrap of administrative permission. On paper that sounds like a smaller, tidier version of the base game. In practice it completely restructures where your stress comes from. The generator, that iron security blanket at the centre of every other Frostpunk map, is gone. You salvage heat from wrecked equipment scattered across a new desolate map, and you send Construction Teams out to lay Safe Routes and build Trading Depots with nearby settlements. The settlement and diplomacy system is the real mechanical addition here. You find communities in the Frostlands, invest favours and resources into them, and slowly convert them from cautious strangers into supply lines you actually depend on. When New London tightens its grip on your food deliveries to punish you for not meeting quotas, those settlement relationships become your lifeline rather than a bonus objective. That tension between serving your corporate overlord and building a quiet coalition of allies is where On The Edge earns its keep as a strategy game. The criticism that landed it at a mixed Steam score is fair, though. Compared to The Last Autumn, which redesigned the tech tree and reframed the entire loop around workforce management, On The Edge feels more conservative in its mechanical ambitions. The cold itself is less punishing because generator management is replaced by a slower, softer heat-salvage system, and some veteran players have noted the temperature threat feels almost defanged relative to earlier scenarios. The settlement trading loop can also devolve into a waiting game: you set up a depot, queue a trade, and then watch timers tick while your real problems pile up elsewhere. Replayability is decent because the endgame forces a genuine moral branch with consequences, and the Endless Mode variant with Settlements adds a separate layer for players who want to stress-test the diplomacy mechanics over longer sessions. For anyone coming in cold, and yes, that means new Frostpunk players too: On The Edge is not the entry point 11 bit Studios recommends, but a reviewer who started here and then worked backwards reported the experience held up regardless. The fundamentals, resource allocation under scarcity, law-book decisions that feel genuinely uncomfortable, scout dispatches that interrupt your careful rhythm at the worst possible moment, are all present and intact. If you are a strategy sim player who has already cleared the base game and The Last Autumn, temper your expectations for a grand mechanical finale. What you get instead is a politically driven, story-complete coda that closes the Frostpunk chapter with a morally sharp ending and a new set of levers to pull, even if those levers are fewer than you hoped. Veredicto de GamerScout

Worth it for base-game veterans who want a political twist on the formula, but don't expect The Last Autumn's level of mechanical reinvention.
