Solid on-pitch improvements buried under a FUT paywall and AI that still loses the plot - worth it if Career Mode is your thing, less so if you live online.

I've put enough hours into this series to know when EA is genuinely listening and when it's performing the act of listening - FC 26 sits somewhere uncomfortably between the two. The headline move this year is splitting gameplay into two distinct presets. Competitive is tuned for head-to-head action in Ultimate Team and Clubs, with faster passing and more direct control, while Authentic slows things down to a grounded, positionally-aware simulation built for Career Mode grinders. It sounds obvious in hindsight, and it largely works: the two sides of the game no longer have to compromise each other's balance, which is a structural fix the series genuinely needed. On the pitch, Authentic mode delivers when the difficulty is cranked up. Physics-based rebounds, more realistic corner success rates, and defenders who actually hold their shape make for scrappy, satisfying 1-0 wins that feel earned. Career Mode itself got a proper injection of life this year too: Manager Live Challenges give you specific storylines to chase across a season, Unexpected Events throw real-life chaos at your club (injuries, financial wobbles, dressing-room drama), and Player Career now has Archetypes that let you shape a distinct progression path inspired by football greats. These are meaningful additions, not just menu reshuffles. The problems are familiar and stubborn. AI defending below World Class difficulty falls apart fast, and teammate positioning in attack still produces moments that would get a Sunday League player dropped. The Clubs mode - where you build out a custom character and compete online - is a genuine highlight for groups, and split-screen PvP means you can absolutely run a couch tournament with friends. But Football Ultimate Team remains the elephant in the room. FUT rewards extra spending more aggressively than before, the menu design is genuinely bad, and the competitive online ecosystem still has a pay-to-progress texture that will frustrate anyone not willing to grind Live Events week after week. A new Challengers tier does try to give lower-Division players a more accessible weekend competition, which is a welcome nod to the casual crowd. For a Saturday night session with three friends on the couch, the split-screen co-op and PvP options hold up fine - pick-up-and-play accessibility is reasonable, and the training minigames do a decent job onboarding newcomers. Full controller support covers DualShock, DualSense, and Xbox pads, which matters if your couch setup is a mixed bag of hardware. Cross-platform multiplayer is also here, so finding online opponents is never the issue. Whether the on-pitch improvements are enough to justify the annual price for returning players is the real question, and the honest answer is: only if Career Mode is genuinely where you spend your time. Best for Career Mode devotees and couch PvP nights; returning FUT grinders will find the same old friction with a fresh coat of paint.
