Tower defense meets action-RPG loot grind in one of the genre's most enduring hybrids, still pulling 93% positive reviews over a decade after launch, if that tells you anything.

I've watched a lot of games try to bolt RPG loot systems onto tower defense and fall apart at the seams. Dungeon Defenders is the one that actually held. The core loop is simple to describe and genuinely hard to put down: you pick a class, spend a build phase placing and upgrading defenses, then jump directly into the action as enemies pour in, swinging weapons and collecting gear while your towers handle the heavy lifting. That back-and-forth rhythm between careful planning and frantic real-time combat is where the game lives, and it clicks in a way that still feels fresh. The four base classes each carve out a distinct role. The Squire plants sturdy, close-range blockade towers and tanks in melee. The Apprentice throws up wide-area magic turrets from a squishier body. The Huntress layers traps and crowd-control for a more reactive style, and the Monk drops aura fields that buff your entire setup rather than dealing direct damage. The Ultimate Collection layers on a stack of DLC heroes beyond those four, including the Series EV (a tower-amplifying support specialist), the Summoner (who swaps static turrets for controllable minion units and became near-mandatory at high-end play), and the Barbarian, who skips building entirely and just punches everything extremely hard. That variety keeps the endgame interesting, though it also exposes the collection's biggest tension: some DLC characters, particularly the Warden, arrived in a state of severe power imbalance that trivialized classes you'd already invested time in. For co-op, the game shines brightest. Splitting class responsibilities across four players, arguing about defense unit budgets, and scrambling when a wave punches through your plan is genuinely good fun. The flip side is a known rough edge: mana drops on a first-come-first-served basis, so uncoordinated pub groups can produce one player hoarding resources while everyone else watches. Playing with people you can actually talk to fixes this almost entirely, but it's worth knowing before you queue into a random lobby. Solo play is viable through the full campaign, but the difficulty scaling leans toward co-op, and some late maps feel designed to need a Summoner's extra defense slots to breathe. The community development team kept updating the PC version with free content and rebalancing patches through 2019, and a Redux conversion mod via the Steam Betas tab extends the experience further if you want it. Steam Workshop support means user-created maps are still being added. For a 2011 game, that's an unusually active shelf life. Survival mode and challenge maps provide a meaningful loop beyond the campaign, and the stat-tracking and worldwide leaderboards give competitive players something to chase. The loot system is deep enough to satisfy gear-chasers, though the inventory interface has the unmistakable feel of something designed before UI clarity was a priority. This is not a game for players who want to pick up a map, play it once, and move on. It rewards people who want to optimize builds, experiment with class pairings, and grind for better equipment. If that sounds exhausting, look elsewhere. If it sounds like a weekend, you'll probably lose two of them. Alex, Scout Team

Veredicto de GamerScout

Best for co-op loot grinders who want a tower defense with genuine RPG depth and don't mind some balance rough edges.
