The Lee brothers are back with a flashier look and a messier package - a co-op beat-em-up that lands some genuine hits but stumbles on janky platforming, patchy polish, and a content count that runs thin.

My first impression watching Double Dragon Revive footage was cautious optimism: a 3D belt-scrolling brawler with Arc System Works fingerprints, four playable characters, and environmental destruction that lets you slam thugs into dumpsters for combat bonuses. That combination sounded better on paper than Yuke's track record suggested it would be in practice. After digesting reviews from across the board, that caution turned out to be warranted - though not entirely for the reasons I expected. The core loop is side-scrolling brawler all the way, clean and familiar. You pick Billy, Jimmy, Marian, or ninja Ranzo and punch your way left-to-right through eight stages of Shadow Warriors. The combat toolkit gives each character a basic combo string, a special attack, a grab, a counter move triggered by timing your heavy attack against blue-glowing enemy strikes, and a charged finisher that fires off an area-clearing blow when your meter maxes out. Enemy weapons drop and can be picked up - bats, knives, nunchakus - though they break quickly and, crucially, they are wildly overpowered, to the point where spamming throwables will trivialize most bosses. That balance hole sits at the center of nearly every critique reviewers raised. The counter system and the environmental interactivity (kicking someone through a car windshield for a special-gauge buff, for instance) hint at a game with genuine mechanical depth, but the weapon imbalance makes it easy to short-circuit all of that. Where Revive genuinely works is in co-op. Local split-screen and online co-op are both present, and the couch experience in particular holds up well - juggling enemies between two players, coordinating finishers, and bouncing thugs off walls is the kind of low-stakes chaos the series was built for. Online co-op has attracted complaints about lag and desync, so your mileage there will depend on connection quality and who you're pairing with. Solo, the game feels noticeably thinner. The story is post-apocalyptic B-movie fare that most reviewers cheerfully skipped through, and the campaign clocks in somewhere around two hours depending on skill level, which is on the shorter end even for the genre. The Extra mode adds challenge missions with varied objectives - timed kill counts, protection runs, score thresholds - and these do extend replayability for players willing to chase completionist goals, but the overall content package still drew consistent "light on value" commentary across the critical community. The presentation is the game's most discussed weakness. The 3D character models and environments read as noticeably rough, with an aesthetic several reviewers compared to mid-2000s budget titles. The illustrated cutscenes and the soundtrack fare considerably better - the art for story segments has genuine flair, and the music has a few stage themes that land. The platforming sections scattered across some stages are another sore spot: the 2.5D perspective makes depth perception unreliable, jumping feels imprecise, and the game does not do new players any favors with pit edges. These sections are not everywhere, but they stick out badly when they appear. If you have a friend to drag through it locally and nostalgia for the original arcade run, Revive scratches a specific itch without ever transcending it. Beat-em-up newcomers looking for the genre's current best should probably start with Streets of Rage 4 first. But if you know what you're signing up for - a rough-around-the-edges, good-enough-in-co-op brawler with solid counter mechanics and a soundtrack worth hearing - the Lee brothers deliver something functional, if frustratingly unpolished.
