Hardcore hex-grid tactics in a biopunk wasteland where the terrain fights back as hard as the enemy does. Worth a look if you can stomach Early Access rough edges and brutal difficulty spikes.

My first session with Deep Fringe ended with a squad wipe because I forgot that the floor under a mutant siege engine was destroyable. That single moment tells you almost everything about what this game is. Developed by Bosoneon Studio and published by Thousand Generation, this is a turn-based tactical RPG built around a hex-grid system where the battlefield itself is a weapon. You can tear out floor tiles, drop ceilings on stronger enemies, shove units off ledges, and reposition elevated platforms to extend firing lines across entire maps. The terrain manipulation is not a gimmick layered on top of standard XCOM-style play; it is the central verb of every fight. The setting is a biopunk post-apocalypse where cybernetic factions wage war against organic horrors: spore colonies, larval swarms, toxic tumors, and bio-modified mercenaries. Combat comparisons to Battle Brothers have been floating around since launch, and the DNA is visible in the energy-based action point system and the punishing, permadeath-adjacent consequence of losing a veteran unit along with whatever gear they were carrying. The world-building is light on explicit exposition and heavy on atmosphere; the game drops you into a fractured society that once had advanced machines but lost its history, and lets you piece things together through faction interactions and expedition discoveries rather than cutscene dumps. What works is the combat depth. Positioning, height advantage, unit roles, and real-time terrain decisions stack into a loop that stays interesting across hours of play. The built-in level editor, with all game assets accessible, gives modders a serious toolkit, and the Steam Workshop integration means player-created campaigns could meaningfully extend the lifespan beyond the planned 14-hour first campaign. The demo also carries a strong approval rating from players who tried it before Early Access launch, which suggests the fundamentals landed well at first contact. What does not work yet is polish. Early Access is doing real work here: players have reported localization glitches that switched the UI language without warning, the content is thinner than the full campaign roadmap promises, and balance remains a moving target. The developer has been transparent about the gap between current scope and the planned multiplayer PVE and PVP modes, which are fully designed but not yet in the build. If you are the type who finds half-finished systems frustrating, the timing is wrong. If you have tolerance for games that improve in public, the bones are strong enough to reward patience. For fans of Warhammer 40K: Mechanicus, Battle Brothers, or anything that asks you to read the terrain before the enemy, Deep Fringe earns attention despite its rough edges. The visual style is crisp pixel art with a genuinely grim tone, the dual-view camera switching between troop overview and environment scan is a smart usability call, and the faction system hints at meaningful choice architecture that should grow as updates land. It is an Early Access buy with real strategic ambition behind it, not a cash grab. Alex, Scout Team

Best for tactical RPG fans who want terrain destruction at the core of combat and can handle Early Access growing pains.
