Two gorgeous new biomes, a genuinely threatening swamp boss, and a handful of fresh weapons that slot seamlessly into early runs - The Bad Seed is compact, deliberate, and earns every minute.

I've lost count of how many times I've blitzed through Dead Cells' opening stretch on autopilot - Prisoners' Quarters, Promenade, rinse, repeat. The Bad Seed is the DLC that finally made me slow down and actually look at the walls again. Motion Twin handed the reins to Evil Empire for this one, and the result is a tightly scoped early-game expansion that respects both the base game's rhythm and the player's time. The new route threads through two biomes before dumping you at the feet of a brand new boss. First stop is the Dilapidated Arboretum, a crumbling greenhouse lit with soft greens and populated by mushroom enemies the community has lovingly nicknamed Yeeters and Jerkshrooms. The Arboretum reads as gentler than Dead Cells' usual opener, but the mushroom men hit harder than they look, and the carnivorous floor plants serve double duty as hazards and trampolines if you're paying attention. From there you drop into the Morass of the Banished, a dense swamp set beneath roots of enormous trees with layered backgrounds that stretch convincingly into the distance. The pixel art here is some of the most atmospheric work in the whole game - blowgun frogmen that phase through walls, bloodsuckers threading between obstacles, the whole zone quietly teaching you the rhythm Mama Tick will demand of you moments later. Mama Tick herself sits in the Nest, and she's a multi-eyed, genuinely unsettling boss tuned to roughly the same difficulty tier as The Concierge. She is not a pushover, but she is fair, and after three mini-boss skirmishes through the Morass, you'll have the muscle memory to handle her. The new weapons and powers deserve specific mention. The Mushroom Boi power lets you summon a Jerkshroom follower to charge headfirst into enemy clusters - and if you're the detonating type, you can pop your little buddy for burst damage, which makes it a natural fit for Survival-build players looking to add chaos. The broader weapon set introduced alongside the DLC includes fans that repel projectiles and musical instruments used as melee weapons, each with enough synergy hooks to shift how you think about builds in those opening biomes. The catch, and the honest limitation of The Bad Seed, is that the new content is short on its own terms. A single clear of the new path from Arboretum to Nest can happen inside twenty minutes. But this is a roguelite, and the biomes are woven into the procedural route deck permanently, meaning every run going forward has a meaningful detour available where previously there was none. Over dozens of hours, that adds up. One area where the DLC is slightly underserved is clarity. The Malaise mechanic and some of the new weapon modifier descriptions still don't communicate their functions clearly enough in-game, and first-time players reaching the Arboretum may not know they need the Vine and Teleportation Runes in advance. Neither issue is a dealbreaker, but both reveal the seams of a game that has grown complex enough to warrant better in-game signposting. Veterans will feel at home immediately. Returners - people who put Dead Cells down a year ago and want a reason to come back - will find The Bad Seed an ideal re-entry point that reactivates the muscle memory gently before the late-game difficulty rematerialises.
