Kill. Die. Learn. Repeat. Dead Cells bundled with its largest-ever DLC is the definitive way to enter one of the sharpest roguelites around, and the Castlevania crossover earns every second of fan service it delivers.

I have lost count of the hours I have poured into Dead Cells, and I mean that as the highest compliment I know how to give. The loop here is deceptively tight: you move through procedurally assembled biomes, collect weapons from a staggering pool of melee, ranged, and skill options, spend Cells to unlock permanent upgrades between runs, and die. You die often, sometimes unfairly, usually your own fault. The three build archetypes - Brutality (red), Tactics (purple), and Survival (green) - each reward completely different weapon synergies and mutations, which means two players with the same run length can look like they are playing entirely separate games. That build diversity is the engine that keeps Dead Cells from ever feeling stale, even well past the twentieth hour. The Return to Castlevania DLC is where this bundle earns its name. Motion Twin has been upfront for years that Castlevania is the number one inspiration behind Dead Cells, so watching them actually collaborate with Konami to build something together carries real weight. The result is two new Castlevania-themed biomes woven into the existing routing, accessible by finding Richter Belmont in the Prisoner's Quarters and descending into Dracula's territory. Classic weapons make the jump with genuine creativity - the Bible, for instance, does not just spin around you like in the old games; you heft a massive version of it and start bashing enemies, eventually summoning the traditional orbit after a few hits. Alucard guides you through, Medusa and Death show up as boss encounters, and the climactic Dracula fight lands with the weight a Castlevania fan will immediately recognise. Shanoa from Order of Ecclesia even replaces the Collector between biomes. The density of affectionate references never tips into cynical nostalgia bait. The DLC is not without friction. Its content is split across two gates in the base game - the first half is noticeably easier than anything else at that depth, acting as a gentle ramp for players who came purely for the Castlevania name, while the second half sits behind the Clock Tower and requires real Dead Cells fluency to reach. Getting ejected back into the base game mid-story feels slightly disjointed. A later patch did address one routing frustration by letting players visit both Castlevania biomes within a single run, which helps enormously. The procedurally generated biomes also lack the hidden walls and secret chambers that make the old Castlevania maps feel like living spaces, a tension that is probably unavoidable given the roguelite structure but worth knowing before you go in expecting a Metroidvania treasure hunt. Soundtrack deserves its own paragraph. The DLC ships with reimagined and original Castlevania music that you can apply to every biome in the entire game, not just the new areas. Hearing those melodies underneath Dead Cells' restless momentum is the kind of small, deliberate design decision that tells you exactly how seriously the team took this crossover. Completing the DLC as the Beheaded also unlocks Richter Mode, an altered run through Dracula's Castle as Richter himself, with 20 costume unlocks woven throughout. The base game, meanwhile, received its final major content update in August 2024 - titled The End is Near - which added new curse-based weapons, enemies, mutations, and biome effects, alongside over 40 head skins and nearly 20 legendary affixes. This is a complete, finished product, and it is better for it. This bundle is the right entry point for anyone who has been circling Dead Cells without committing. The base game alone justifies the time investment for fans of tight 2D action and run-variety. The Return to Castlevania DLC rewards you further if you carry even a soft spot for Konami's gothic legacy. If you came for whips and vampires and want the roguelite loop to make those feel earned, that is exactly what you get here. Kai, Scout Team
