Acerca de Dead as Disco
I went in expecting Hi-Fi Rush with a disco costume. What I got was something stranger and more committed: a 3D beat-em-up that treats every fight as a choreographed music video, and genuinely means it. The combat system is called Beat Kune Do, and the name earns its keep. Every punch, parry, and dodge snaps to whichever track is playing, and landing hits off-beat carries a real damage penalty - roughly 40% less effectiveness per off-beat strike. That number sounds punishing, but when the timing clicks, the payoff is hypnotic. Charlie Disco stops feeling like a character you control and starts feeling like a performance you inhabit. The bones of the combat will read instantly if you have any time with the Batman Arkham games or Sifu. One button for attacks, one for parry, one for dodge, one for finishers. Simple inputs, deep expression. The genius is layered on top: a Fever bar that fills through perfect hits and deploys as Fever Rush, a burst-damage combo that shreds boss phase transitions; a Disco-Meter that governs your movement speed and dodge invincibility frames; a Windmill breakdance move that launches staggered enemies for Aerial Takedowns; and a stale-input penalty that actively punishes button-mashing by cratering your multiplier. The game is teaching you to be musical, not just reactive. The four Idol boss fights currently in Early Access - Dex, Prophet, Hemlock, and Arora - each bring their own genre and attack logic, forcing you to re-calibrate your rhythm instincts from fight to fight. The custom music feature is where Dead as Disco quietly becomes something harder to categorise. Drop your own MP3, FLAC, or WAV files into the local folder and the game auto-detects BPM and generates a playable combat chart. A slow track turns the whole thing methodical; a fast one tests your reaction ceiling. The scoring mode Infinite Disco leans hardest into this, with leaderboards tracking perfect combo chains and community Song of the Day challenges that push top players past 50x multipliers. A few players on Steam have flagged that BPM auto-detection can stumble on tracks outside the 120-200 BPM sweet spot, requiring manual calibration - that is a legitimate friction point worth knowing about, and a noted piece of community feedback Brain Jar appears to be actively working through. As Early Access releases go, the honest caveat is content volume. Four Idol missions and the Encore hub bar are a solid foundation, but some reviewers found the current build wraps up faster than the price suggests if you come in expecting a full campaign. The roadmap commits to additional Idols, new skills and abilities, multiplayer co-op, more licensed music, and expanded UGC tools - all of which suggests the 1.0 release could be genuinely substantial. Checkpointing inside the boss fights is also occasionally ungenerous, which stings when a multi-stage encounter sends you back further than feels fair. These feel like iteration problems, not design failures. The foundation - the way the Disco-Meter pulses, the way a Windmill into Aerial Takedown lands right on a snare hit - is already something worth sitting with. If you have any affection for rhythm, for spectacle fighting, or for the specific feeling of becoming quietly brilliant at something that rewards patience, this one is worth your attention right now. The Early Access caveat is real but so is the momentum. Brain Jar are industry veterans making their debut, and it shows in the craft.
