Operation Market Garden through the lens of one of PC wargaming's most demanding tactical engines - essential content for CMBN owners who've exhausted Normandy and want a sharply different fight.

I'll be upfront: if you haven't already bought into Combat Mission Battle for Normandy and upgraded to engine version 2.0, this module is not your starting point. Market Garden slots into an existing ecosystem with real prerequisites - it requires the base game at v2.0 minimum - and that dependency shapes every honest assessment of its value. For the committed CMBN player, though, it's a substantial and distinctive expansion that earns its place. What immediately separates Market Garden from the Normandy campaign it grows out of is the terrain. The bocage is gone. In its place you get the flat polder fields, heathland, drainage ditches, and canals of the Netherlands, where small elevation changes carry outsized tactical weight and a well-placed MG42 can lock down an entire axis of advance. Smoke management becomes critical in a way that Normandy's hedgerow fighting never quite forced on you. Urban combat at Arnhem and Nijmegen means house-clearing and close-range firefights in one scenario, then open-field suppression problems in the next. The variety holds up across the 14 standalone battles and two campaigns - one Allied (The Road to Nijmegen), one German - which cover fog operations, night actions, dawn paratrooper assaults, and armored pushes against veteran airborne infantry. The roster additions are the other headline. Sixty-eight new formations and 50 vehicles arrive, covering the full Allied airborne order of battle - US, British, and Polish paratroops, plus the British ground relief column. The German side is correctly portrayed as a patchwork: Heer, Waffen SS, Luftwaffe ground personnel, and naval staff units scraped together in a crisis, which plays out mechanically in the wide variance in unit quality you manage per scenario. Seven new British vehicles include the Challenger Mk VIII tank and a Vickers K-armed Jeep. Historically detailed maps of Arnhem, Oosterbeek, and Nijmegen - including accurate bridge models - give scenario designers and quick battle players genuinely usable assets. Seven large master maps ship with the module, cuttable for custom scenarios. The criticism that circulated at launch has some staying power. Players who wanted a dedicated Red Devils campaign following 2 Para's fight at Arnhem Bridge came away disappointed - the British airborne get standalone scenarios but no dedicated campaign track. Building a quick battle force from scratch remains unintuitive, especially for anyone who came up through the classic Combat Mission titles. Small UI text and slow load times on larger battles were flagged at release and remain minor friction points. None of these break the experience, but they are real. For the wargamer already invested in CMBN, Market Garden is the right next purchase - it opens a genuinely different tactical environment, adds the deepest order of battle in the module lineup, and the scenario diversity holds up over many sessions. Newcomers to the series should start with the base game first; this is content for people who already know why they care. Alex, Scout Team

Essential depth addition for serious CMBN owners - skip it only if you haven't finished the base game first.
