Columns is SEGA's answer to Puyo Puyo, except instead of same-colored blobs you're matching vertical chains of gems. Drop three-gem clusters down a vertical shaft, clear lines when three or more of the same color align horizontally or diagonally, and watch your score climb. It's straightforward stuff: no power-ups, no wild mechanics, no story. Just you versus the rising tide of tiles. The problem is that 2010 is late to release something this stripped-down. Bejeweled and its clones had been refining this formula for a decade already, and Columns doesn't add anything to justify its existence. The visuals are basic, the interface feels dated even for the era, and there's no hook, no challenge mode with teeth, no leaderboards that matter, no reason to keep playing after 20 minutes. It's a decent time-killer if you stumble into it, but there's nothing here that makes it worth seeking out.
