I went in expecting the usual city-sim loop: zoning, infrastructure, watching your metropolis grow or collapse under poor planning. Cities XL 2012 delivers that competently enough. You get new building sets, additional maps, and a starter guide that actually helps new players understand the systems. The mechanics are straightforward: manage traffic, utilities, budgets, and citizen happiness across various district types. The problem is timing. By 2012, this franchise was already feeling stale against rival city-builders, and the core systems lack the depth or polish that would make tedium feel rewarding. It's playable and inoffensive, but you're not missing anything by skipping it for something fresher.
