I fired up Choplifter HD expecting a straightforward nostalgia play, and that's mostly what I got. You pilot a helicopter, swoop down to hot zones, extract hostages or cargo, and haul them to safety while dodging enemy fire. The core mechanic is solid: the hover-and-grab timing feels responsive, and there's genuine tension in tight extractions under fire. Enemy AI is competent enough to keep you honest. The problem isn't the concept, it's the execution. Mission design gets repetitive fast, graphics look flat and dated even for 2012, and the campaign doesn't build momentum the way a good arcade shooter should. Metacritic's 65 is fair. If you're chasing that original Choplifter vibe and can tolerate rough edges, the core loop scratches that itch. Otherwise, there are tighter arcade games that do this better.
