A pocket-sized social sim that plays like Persona's friendship mechanics stripped of demons and given a cheerful anime makeover. Worth sampling before the full game, if you can still find it.

I have a soft spot for games that do one small thing with genuine care, and this demo for Cherry Tree High Comedy Club is a tidy window into something genuinely unusual. The full game itself is a doujin production by the one-person circle 773, later localized by Nyu Media, and it sits in a niche that almost nobody occupies: a social sim built entirely around platonic friendship, with zero combat, zero romance routes, and a time limit that ought to feel stressful but somehow reads as cozy. The loop is deceptively simple. You guide Mairu Hibisu, a relentlessly earnest high schooler, through a spring break with a hard deadline at the end of April. She needs to recruit enough classmates to keep her comedy club alive. Each in-game day is split into time blocks, and each block is a choice: wander town and chat up a recruit, take on odd jobs to earn money, or study one of twelve conversation topics in the Repertoire system. Those topics range from Video Games and Romance to Politics and Cooking. Leveling them up unlocks better dialogue options with specific characters, which is the mechanical spine the whole thing runs on. It shares obvious DNA with the Social Link system in Persona 3 and 4, only here the structure is lighter and more forgiving, with the pressure coming from scarcity of days rather than any punishing skill check. What the demo lets you feel out is whether that loop clicks for you personally. The writing is where the game earns its goodwill. Nyu Media partnered with Tezuka Productions, the team behind Phoenix Wright's English scripts, for the localization, and the snappy, self-aware humour lands more often than you'd expect from a small doujin project crossing cultural translation barriers. The pixel sprite art is warm and hand-crafted, the sort of work that knows exactly what it is and commits. The soundtrack leans upbeat and slightly hyperactive in a way that suits Mairu's personality precisely. None of it is technically sophisticated, but intentional craft reads differently than technical limitation, and this reads as intentional. The honest caveats: the six recruitable characters are distinct enough on paper but don't develop much past their introductory hooks. The Repertoire skill grind can feel thin since each topic can only be used once per character in conversation, which means the system runs dry faster than its framing implies. Resolution is locked at 640x480, which may bother some players. And the demo, by its nature, is a preview of a very short game, so manage expectations about scope accordingly. What the demo is really doing is answering a single question: does a game this quiet, this focused on small talk and schedule management, appeal to you at all? If you've ever wished a friendship sim existed that wasn't dressed up as a dating sim, and if you can accept a two-to-three hour experience that knows exactly when to stop, the answer to that question is probably yes. Worth noting that the full western release was delisted in 2022 when Nyu Media shut down, so availability is patchy. This demo may be the easiest way in. Kai, Scout Team
