If the Build engine FPS holy trinity has a mean streak, it's this one. Caleb's revenge tour packs the sharpest weapon sandbox of its era into one complete, brutal package.

I've spent time with all three corners of the Build engine FPS trinity, and Blood is the one I always come back to when I want to feel genuinely outgunned and outwitted. Released in 1997 by Monolith Productions and collected here with both expansions (Cryptic Passage and Plasma Pak) under the One Unit Whole Blood banner, this is the definitive way to play one of the most mechanically inventive shooters of the 1990s. You play as Caleb, a resurrected gunslinger-turned-cultist out for revenge against the dark god Tchernobog who betrayed and killed him. The setup sounds grimly serious, but Caleb spends most of the game shouting darkly funny one-liners at the enemies he's incinerating - the tone is closer to Sam Raimi than to Clive Barker, and it works. The level design matches that personality: you'll tear through a carnival funhouse, a moving train, a ghost mansion, and a canyon temple, and almost none of it feels like the endless metal-corridor monotony that dragged down a lot of its contemporaries. The weapon set is where Blood genuinely earns its cult reputation. You start with a pitchfork and a flare gun - and the flare gun alone, sticking burning projectiles into enemy flesh, already tells you this game has a personality. From there you pick up a sawed-off shotgun (Caleb's signature), a Tommy gun, a napalm launcher that flings arcing fire, an aerosol can you light with a Zippo to improvise a flamethrower, a Tesla cannon, a life-leeching staff, and a voodoo doll that lets you stab enemies into a stunned state. Nearly every weapon has an alternate fire mode - one of the earliest PC shooters to implement this - and the dynamite bundles support proximity triggers and remote detonators for genuinely creative play. The arsenal variety is exceptional even by modern standards. Here is where honesty matters: Blood is hard. Noticeably, deliberately hard, with enemies that are aggressive and well-designed to punish sloppy play. The difficulty scaling is there, but even on lower settings the game demands respect. There are also real friction points for modern players. The controls predate modern FPS conventions and take deliberate configuration to feel right with WASD and mouselook. Once set up, movement clicks into place reasonably well, but the auto-aim system has a lingering tension with the mouselook mechanics that you never fully stop noticing. Running this through DOSBox (as the package requires) is straightforward, but online multiplayer remains awkward compared to contemporaries that received native Windows ports. These are known quantities going in, not surprises. One Unit Whole Blood is the right entry point if you've heard Blood mentioned alongside Doom and Duke Nukem 3D and want to understand why it inspires such loyalty. It does one thing, the act of shooting things with a deranged and creative arsenal through wildly varied levels, at an exceptionally high level. If retro FPS is somewhere in your rotation, or if you've bounced off the slower modern boomer-shooter revival and want the source material instead, this package gives you the complete picture.
