The multiplayer bones are genuinely great, but between a hollow campaign, a divisive monetization model, and a Season 2 delay for extra polish, this one rewards patience over impulse.

I went in expecting the usual Battlefield rollercoaster, and the multiplayer delivered exactly the highs the series owes you. Large-scale maps accommodate tanks, helicopters, and jets alongside infantry pushing through tight urban corridors, so a single match can swing from a terrifying open-field advance under air cover to a slow, brutal room-by-room grind. The new Kinesthetic Combat System adds crouch-sprinting for low-profile movement across open ground and a drag-and-revive mechanic that actually makes you feel like you have a reason to stay near your squad rather than lone-wolfing it. Gunplay across the class roster is crisp and weighted, and the sound design is genuinely one of the best in the genre right now. The revamped Portal mode is where the Phantom Edition earns most of its premium asking price. It functions as a large sandbox that lets you mix the current game's near-future Phantom operative roster and arsenal with classic Battlefield-era content, and the advanced scripting tools mean community-created modes can get quite creative. Phantom Mode itself adds a stealth-flavored layer to standard multiplayer that breaks up the relentless frontline chaos when you want a different tempo. If you are buying primarily for the multiplayer and Portal sandbox, there is a lot here. The single-player campaign is a different story. The setup, a near-future PMC faction called Pax destabilizing governments globally, has potential, but the execution is a collection of competent-but-forgettable missions stitched together by characters you will not remember and a plot that ends without answering its own questions. The AI, both allied and enemy, has a tendency to wander in ways that undercut the intensity the game is clearly going for. A handful of missions shine, especially anything that gives you open terrain and freedom of approach, but as a complete narrative experience it falls flat. On the community side, the picture is messier than the Metacritic score of 82 suggests. The Steam rating sitting at 64 percent positive out of a very large sample reflects real frustration: a class and operator system that feels restrictive for players who want deep character customization, persistent technical bugs including hit-registration inconsistencies, memory leaks during long sessions, and resupply mechanic glitches. On top of that, EA delayed Season 2 from January to February 2026 specifically to address community feedback, which is either a good sign that the studio is listening or a warning that the post-launch roadmap is still being figured out, depending on your level of trust in the publisher. The honest verdict: if your primary reason to buy is 64-player combined-arms multiplayer and you have friends to squad up with, Battlefield 6 delivers that in a way the series has not managed in years. If you want a meaningful solo experience or a cosmetically customizable operator you can genuinely make your own, the current version will leave you wanting. Post-launch updates are ongoing and the studio appears to be course-correcting, but right now this is a multiplayer-first purchase that comes with a side of frustration tax. Alex, Scout Team
