A 128-player shooter that launched as a cautionary tale and slowly patched its way to respectability, worth a look at a discount, with eyes open.

My honest reaction when I first heard about Battlefield 2042 post-launch was to keep my distance. The Steam verdict says it all: Mixed, sitting at 47% positive across over 325,000 reviews. That number tells a story about a game that burned goodwill fast and has spent years trying to earn it back. The question worth answering here is not what 2042 was at launch, but what it actually is now. The core loop is classic Battlefield scaled up hard. Conquest drops up to 128 players onto massive maps where teams fight for control of sectors rather than individual flags, spreading the chaos across wider ground than older entries dared to attempt. Breakthrough is arguably the better mode for structured play, one team attacks a sequence of sectors, the other defends, and the 128-player count means every lane stays contested. The Plus System adds a mid-match attachment swap mechanic, letting you flip between a close-range sight and a longer scope on the fly without being locked to a pre-set loadout. It sounds small but it meaningfully changes how gunfights play out across maps that shift from open-field sniping to tight-corridor brawling. Specialists replaced the classic class system at launch, and while later updates walked that back by integrating class roles into the Specialist structure, the compromise still leaves some veterans cold. Mobility standouts like Mackay's grappling hook and Sundance's wingsuit inject vertical movement that earlier entries lacked, and both are genuinely fun to use. Battlefield Portal is where 2042 quietly does something interesting. It pulls weapons, vehicles, classes, and maps from Battlefield 1942, Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3, letting players run those classic rulesets through a modern engine. Running Bad Company 2's Rush on a remastered Valparaiso with current-gen visuals is the kind of nostalgia hit that holds up even when the main game frustrates. The custom mode toolkit is deep enough to build genuinely weird game types, which gives the whole package an extended shelf life beyond the standard rotation. The problems are real and worth naming. At launch, 2042 was riddled with bugs, server failures, and an unusually thin weapon roster. DICE has addressed the technical debt substantially over multiple seasons of patches, and the game is stable in a way it simply was not in 2021. Player counts recovered during major updates and free weekends, but the daily active community is modest compared to franchise peaks. Longer matchmaking queues are a real risk in off-peak hours, and some of the original map design complaints, too spread out, not enough organic infantry choke points, were never fully resolved. The UI, historically rough, has improved but still requires more clicks than it should for loadout management. Who is this for right now? Battlefield fans who want large-scale combined-arms mayhem, jets, tanks, infantry, and helicopters sharing a single objective, and are willing to meet the game on its own terms rather than compare it against the high watermarks of BF3 or Bad Company 2. Portal sweetens the deal for longtime fans, and the post-patch stability makes the moment-to-moment shooting functional and occasionally spectacular. Anyone expecting a tight competitive experience or deep solo content will bounce off immediately. Alex, Scout Team

Veredicto de GamerScout

Best for large-scale shooter fans who buy at a discount and can overlook a complicated history in exchange for chaotic, occasionally brilliant multiplayer.
