Battle Mages is a turn-based tactical RPG that leans hard into the auto-battle formula: you equip spells, position your mage, and let the AI execute your strategy while you watch. The appeal is pure build experimentation - swapping between offensive fireballs, defensive wards, and crowd control makes a real difference in how fights play out, even if you're not piloting every move. Pacing is snappy and combat loops are satisfying if you like fiddling with loadouts between encounters. The trade-off is exactly what you'd expect from a 2014 indie strategy game: story is thin (fresh-from-academy mage does trials), enemy variety plateaus, and there's not much meat beyond "optimize spell combo and win." It's a nostalgia artifact more than a game that holds up as a full experience. If grid-based tactical setups and spell builds scratch your itch for 5-10 hours, grab it on sale. Otherwise, you're looking at something that's dated its welcome.
