I've spent hundreds of hours across Assassin's Creed 2, Brotherhood, and Revelations, and this trilogy remains the franchise's creative peak. You play Ezio Auditore across three interconnected stories: his origin as a vengeful youth in Florence, his rise as an Assassin mentor in Rome, and his final chapter hunting Templar secrets in Istanbul. Each game layers parkour, stealth, and social stealth (blending into crowds) into a sandbox where you can approach contracts however you want. The story-writing and character work here dwarf most modern entries, and the setting design makes each city feel lived-in rather than procedurally generated. What holds up less well: mission design is rigid by today's standards, and fail-states punish deviation. Combat can feel clunky outside of animations, and the modern-day framing (Desmond's story) splits focus awkwardly. But if you want atmospheric historical fiction with real replay value, Ezio's arc is the template the series has chased ever since. Console-exclusive pricing is steep, but these are still worth your time if you've never played them.
