18th-century grand strategy meets real-time battles across three continents. Empire is Total War at its most historically ambitious, warts and all.

Total War: EMPIRE is a turn-based grand strategy game layered over real-time tactical battles, set during the gunpowder age of the 1700s. You pick a faction, build an economy, research technologies, manage trade routes and political stability, then personally command armies and navies in battles where musket volleys, cannon fire, and cavalry flanks decide the outcome. The Definitive Edition bundles every piece of released DLC, including the Warpath Campaign that lets you play as Native American nations, plus the Special Forces and Elite Unit packs that expand your roster on land and sea. The scope here is genuinely staggering. The campaign map stretches from the Americas to India, and you can chase colonial dominance, European hegemony, or naval supremacy depending on faction choice. Great Britain opens up an obvious trade-and-navy path; Prussia rewards aggressive land warfare; the Maratha Confederacy gives you a brutal uphill fight against encroaching European powers. Technology trees unlock better rifles, government reforms, and economic buildings, so there is always a meaningful queue competing for your attention. The political system, though not as deep as later Total War entries, adds cabinet management decisions that can spark revolution if you ignore them long enough. Where Empire earns its Very Positive rating is in the sheer feeling of commanding an 18th-century army. Deploying troops in line formations, timing a cavalry charge to break a routing unit, coordinating broadside fire in a naval engagement - these moments hold up. The inclusion of proper naval battles was a first for the series, and while they can feel sluggish to newcomers, mastering wind angles and boarding tactics is its own rewarding sub-game. The AI on the campaign map is serviceable, though it occasionally makes baffling diplomatic choices, and on the battlefield it handles linear tactics reasonably well without ever feeling like a human opponent. Seasoned players will want to install community mods from the Steam Workshop fairly early; mods like Darthmod Empire dramatically improve AI behavior and add faction depth. For newcomers, the learning curve is real but not punishing if you treat the first campaign as a tutorial. Play France or Britain, accept that you will mismanage your economy in the first 30 turns, and use that as calibration. The in-game advisors are dated but functional, and there is a wealth of community guides that flatten the slope considerably. This is not a game that hand-holds you, but it rewards the hour you spend reading how trade nodes and technology unlocks interact. Once that clicks, the mid-game snowball effect is deeply satisfying in a way few strategy games match. The late game can bog down in endless minor-faction cleanup, which is a fair criticism, but by that point you have usually built something worth admiring on the map. Released in 2009, Empire shows its age in the UI and some pathfinding quirks, and the AI naval aggression on the campaign map is historically questionable. But as a complete package with all DLC included, a strong mod ecosystem, and battles that still produce genuinely tense moments, it holds a very specific place in strategy gaming that nothing has fully replaced. If 18th-century empire-building sounds like your kind of spreadsheet problem, this delivers. Diego, Scout Team
