Survive the Fall
Squad tactics meet settlement building in a post-meteor wasteland, but Mixed Steam reviews signal some rough edges worth knowing about before you commit.
GamerScout Verdict
Best for fans of State of Decay-style survival loops who can overlook thin writing and some PC performance roughness.

About Survive the Fall
I went into Survive the Fall expecting yet another tired post-apocalypse where humanity's hubris is the real villain. What I got instead was a meteor-struck world locked in eternal autumn, and a game that genuinely tries to straddle three genres at once: isometric squad-based action, open-world scavenging, and settlement management. That is an ambitious swing for a small Polish indie studio, and it mostly lands, with caveats. The core structure splits your time between two distinct modes. Out in the field, you direct a squad of up to three survivors through three sizeable biomes, each gated by terrain that requires crafted gear to traverse, so progression feels earned rather than arbitrary. Combat uses twin-stick shooter mechanics in real time, but a planning mode lets you slow things down, survey enemy view arcs, and issue targeted orders to your companions before things get messy. Stealth is a genuine option, not just window dressing, and rotating between a direct assault and a crouched flanking approach through the undergrowth gives missions a satisfying tactical texture. Each survivor carries specialisations that actually affect output at camp, so the person you send to chop wood or scavenge components is a real resource decision, not flavour text. Back at base, you erect buildings, clear debris, manage a growing roster of settlers, and push a research tree that gates better gear. The loop is familiar if you have played State of Decay 2 or Wasteland, but the handshake between the two halves is cleaner than most genre hybrids manage. Where the game stumbles is exactly where Mixed Steam scores tend to come from: writing and technical polish. The factions you encounter, raiders, cultists, and resource-hoarding opportunists, are genre boilerplate, and the main characters lack the kind of memorable arcs that make you care about a survival story past the twenty-hour mark. The narrative premise, a meteor strike rather than a man-made catastrophe, is a fresher angle, but the storytelling does not fully capitalise on that distinction. Bugs and optimization issues compound the problem. PC performance can be inconsistent, with frame-pacing hiccups reported even on mid-to-high-end hardware, and the absence of DLSS, FSR, or XeSS support in 2025 is a genuine oversight that will sting players on older rigs. The tutorial is long, though it does fold mechanical instruction into the story reasonably well rather than drowning you in menus. For RPG players specifically, the build variety and gear research are functional but not deep enough to sustain a second full playthrough purely for min-maxing. Choices in the world affect faction relationships and resource access, but do not branch the narrative in ways that reward re-reads. If you come in wanting Fallout-level reactivity, temper expectations. If you come in wanting a well-paced tactical scavenging loop with a camp-building backbone and enough atmospheric world-dressing to keep you curious, the game delivers that comfortably. Patience with rough edges is the admission price.
