About NTE: Neverness to Everness
I went in sceptical. Hotta Studio's Tower of Fantasy left a bruise on my expectations, so sitting down with NTE: Neverness to Everness felt like cautious optimism at best. What I did not expect was a game that commits so fully to being several things at once that the sheer audacity of it almost works. You play as an amnesiac Appraiser at Eibon Antiquities, a shop that moonlights as an anomaly hunting outfit, and Hethereau is your playground: a dense supernatural city where a tear in the sky has been leaking something that turns people into monsters. The premise is legitimately interesting, and the opening hours carry a real narrative pulse. The worldbuilding is where NTE earns genuine respect. Hethereau reads like a city rather than a backdrop. Overlapping faction politics, city ambience that shifts by district, and a cast of companions called Espers each carry enough personal history to feel like more than ability dispensers. The writing leans anime-quirky at times when it should lean harder into its darker urban mythology, and progression being gated behind character level rather than story beats is a design choice that will pull narrative-first players out of the moment repeatedly just to grind before the next case unlocks. If you are here for the story, pack patience alongside your build spreadsheets. Combat is the mechanical heart, and it is more layered than early footage suggests. Your team of four Espers rotates in real time, with the Esper Cycle system acting as the engine that drives everything: fill the meter through normal attacks, Skills, and Ultimates, trigger a character swap at the right moment, and chain elemental reactions across six attributes arranged on a circular wheel (Cosmos, Anima, Incantation, Chaos, Psyche, and Lakshana, with reactions only firing between adjacent pairs). Boss fights add a stagger bar mechanic that demands you break enemy guard before unloading your biggest combos, and perfect-timing parries can refund ultimate energy for characters like Fadia, adding a meaningful skill ceiling above the casual floor. The system is forgiving enough that casual players can coast on spectacle, but rewarding enough for anyone willing to study rotations. That said, critics are right that the combat lacks the snap and depth of the genre's best offerings at harder difficulty tiers. Outside of fighting, the game is aggressively broad. Racing, fishing, property management, public transit exploration, and a life-sim layer all compete for your attention. It is ambitious to the point of feeling unfocused in the early hours, though these systems interact well enough that the loop rarely feels hollow. The Unreal Engine 5 presentation is genuinely impressive on high-end PCs, with neon-lit streets and dense crowds creating a constant sense of a living city. Budget for the spec requirements honestly: mid-range setups will struggle during busy combat encounters, and the developers still have optimization work ahead of them. The AI art controversy that surfaced at launch is a real and fair criticism worth knowing about before you invest your time. For gacha-averse RPG fans, the monetization is reportedly one of the more generous in the genre right now, though any live-service game's F2P friendliness is a promise that needs watching over time. What NTE offers today is a stylish, flawed, and surprisingly ambitious foundation. The narrative hook is real, the Esper system has build-variety legs if the roster keeps expanding, and Hethereau is the kind of city I want to keep wandering. Just go in knowing the story will ask you to grind for it, the combat rewards study more than reflex, and the question of whether this holds together at hour 60 is still open.
