Need for Speed: Payback

I went in expecting a straightforward racing game and instead got a narrative-driven action title with three playable crew members, each with distinct car classes and skill trees. The heist missions and story beats are genuinely solid; the problem is the loot box wrapper around car customization and performance tuning. Your gear drops from races, and yes, better parts mean better stats. It's not pay-to-win in multiplayer PvP (which is separate matchmaking), but it strangles the single-player pacing with artificial progression gates. If you can tolerate grinding for parts or stomach the old-school loot system, the driving itself is competent arcade-racing fare with decent destruction physics and co-op heist sections that work. The story wraps up cleanly. But this feels like a 2017 game held back by corporate monetization decisions, not a full-blooded racer. Skip it unless crew-based narrative and co-op missions outweigh your annoyance with progression busywork.
