Might & Magic: Heroes VII

I went in hoping for a Heroes III spiritual successor, and what I found was a game caught between respecting its legacy and failing to modernize it. Might & Magic: Heroes VII delivers the core loop you want: turn-based tactical battles, hero leveling across multiple campaigns with branching storylines, and faction-specific unit rosters. The campaign narrative actually has meat to it, with character arcs that carry weight across the story missions. RPG progression hooks are tight enough to keep you pushing forward. The catch: this is visibly low-budget. The UI feels clunky, animations stutter, and there's a grinding quality to later maps that pure number-inflation can't hide. Multiplayer exists but the community is basically gone. If you're specifically after a 90s-style hero strategy game with genuine story stakes and don't mind rough edges, it scratches that itch. Anyone expecting modern QoL or balance tuning should look elsewhere. The campaign is the draw here, and it does deliver.
