About Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor
I spent enough time with Shadow of Mordor to understand why it caught on despite being sandwiched between bigger Middle-earth releases. The core loop is straightforward: hunt enemies across open-world Mordor, use stealth or brutal combat to thin their ranks, and climb the orc hierarchy by targeting named captains. The Nemesis system lets enemies remember you across encounters, creating a loosely persistent rival dynamic that feels more ambitious than it actually is. Combat borrows the rhythm-based parry-and-counter flow that Batman's games perfected, which works fine even now. The script and story lean heavily on the lore, but the real draw is watching named orc captains develop personalities through repeated encounters. It's not deep, but it's functional enough to justify 15-20 hours if you're after a solid action romp in Tolkien's world without overthinking it. Older ports can be janky, but the core experience delivers what it promises: straightforward sword-swinging, stealth options, and enough orc-hunting busywork to scratch that power-fantasy itch.
