Jagged Alliance 1 Gold Edition

I respect Jagged Alliance in the way I respect Planescape: Torment, it's old, it's dense, and it refuses to hold your hand. You hire a ragtag team of soldiers-for-hire, each with distinct voices and quirks, then navigate turn-based tactical combat on grid-based maps. The hook is ruthless economy: mercenaries demand contracts, healing costs money, ammo runs out. Lose someone permanently and you feel it. The writing has personality that most modern games don't bother with; your mercs banter, refuse orders if morale dips, and react to the chaos around them. The Gold Edition bundles the original plus Deadly Games expansion, giving you substantial content. The catch: this is 1995 design. The UI will frustrate you. Pathfinding is clunky. Difficulty spikes exist. But if you've ever wanted turn-based tactics with actual stakes and character, where a corporal named Gus becomes someone you'll remember, this is the game. Not a remake, not streamlined. The real thing.
